I don't know if this is old news or not, but it was news to me! I was in Waterstones today and there is a new updated version of the 1001 Books book. I did have a flip through, but without my copy to compare it was difficult to tell what was new. One that I did notice as a new edition is A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, so all those of you who have read it can notch up another 1001 Books read. I personally am going to stick to the original list otherwise it could all get very confusing.

Thanks for letting us know that Chris. I was wondering if and when it would be updated, as there have been some fantastic books published recently, not that I would include Tractors (I enjoyed it, but not that much). Like you, I think I will stick with the original list, but it would be nice to know what has been added and deleted. _________________ Currently reading: The Tent The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy and Granny The Pag by Nina Bawden

I wondered how they were going to do this ~ I must admit I have been very slack in my 1001 reading! I must make more of an effort, although I think Master and Margarita might be on there I'll have to have a check. _________________ Reading: The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho

| Sounds like it's going to get complicated with an updated list (but it would be nice to have a few more recent great books to choose from!!) |

This does sound complicated. I think I'll have to stick with the original list. I'll have to check out the updated one as well tho! _________________ Currently Reading:

Ooh I didn't know about a revised version, thanks Chris. I wonder how many new books have been added and if it's worth getting. Hmm. I wouldn't have put Tractors on the list either - thought it was ok.
How about I add the new titles to the list posted in the challenge forum, so if you want to read them as part of the challenge you can?

That would be great. Could be a lot of work though - the revisions might not necessarily all be added on to the end! _________________ 2008 '1001 Challenge' Books: 9 |

Yeah I wondered if new additions were tagged onto the end or not. I've asked about it on the 1001 Facebook group. I wonder if any of the lists published online have been updated? I've looked & they all seem to be as before. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Went to Borders today to check out the new 1001 book, but they didn't have it I am itching to know what's been added! _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

It's just dawned on me that if books have been added to the 1001 list, others must have been taken off it, else it'll no longer be 1001 books to read... unless they change the title to 1010 books
How have they done it I wonder?? _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Found a link explaining what books have been added to the 1001 list and which have been removed. Apparently there are fewer Dickens and Coetzee titles.
Someone at LibraryThing posted some of the new books added (think there are 136 or so new titles on the list):
Snow by Orhan Pamuk
Notebooks of Malte Laurids Briggs by Rilke
Bartleby and co by Enrique Vila-Matas
Spring flowers, snow frost by Kadare
Memoirs of my nervous illness
Sandokan
The namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre
Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
The accidental by Ali Smith
The short history of tractors in Ukranian
Falling man by Delillo
Measuring the world by Kehlman
Half of a yellow sun by Adichie
The reluctant fundamentalist
It's a shame books previously thought worthy of being read before we all popped our clogs have been removed. On the other hand, great that new titles have been added (although not sure I'd have added Tractors and The Accidental to the list, but that's only my opinion so there you go). But it means I need to buy the new edition now!! How often will they update it, I wonder?
So to stop it being confusing, I suggest we count both lists towards the challenge, so that books removed from the new edition still count. It means we have more than 1001 books to choose from.
I'll try to get a revised list asap. If you see one on the net, please post here.

Thanks Glynis - i agree lets stick to the old list and just add instead of trying to work out what's not in it anymore.
I must say I'm not too impressed by the additions so far!
The short history of tractors in Ukranian - although I enjoyed this, I dont think it rates being included.
Falling man by Delillo - I tried to read this a few months ago and hated it
Half of a yellow sun by Adichie - same as above! _________________ Currently reading: The Tent The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy and Granny The Pag by Nina Bawden

Glad about The Accidental as it's on my TBR pile but seems a bit odd to take books out of a "definitive" list chosen by a panel.
And agree, Tractors is hardly a must read, enjoyable though it might have been. |

Has anyone read The namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri ? It's a great book and I'm pleased to see it's on the list but don't know how I feel if it's been added only to have one of Dickens dropped.
