I hope it's ok that I start this thread. I wasn't sure where to put it.

I challeneged myself to rad 50 books in 2007 but I only managed 43. I have decided to try again this year to get to 50 and I'm up to 15 this year so far. Also, I don't read that many classics so I'm challenging myself to read a classic a month in 2008.

Good Luck Katie.  I read very quickly - I always have done.  I usually have another book on the go as well as my main read - usually short stories, or a short novel.
Last year I managed to read 152 books - dont ask how!  I have two jobs!!

Hi firepoppy - I am doing a similar challenge on Vox and LibraryThing; I hoped to read 50 books last year, and I think I would have done it, except that in November I got completely stuck with The Historian.  Back on the challenge this year, and so far I am on track.

Good luck with your challenge

Anne - 152 books in a year!!  I am very impressed!

I've challenged myself to read 100, and so far I'm doing well with that.  I've also challenged myself to read a classic a month although this month I've stalled with The Death of Ivan Illyich, it's only thin but I've found it hard going even though I loved Anna Karenina.  I wasn't too well when I was trying it though and just wanted to sleep so I'll give it another go.

I'm having the same problem with The Historian!!! Seems to be taking forever!

Katie: I'm trying to do the same with reading the classics. If you have not read it already, give Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome a go. It is hilarious!

Three Men in a Boat is funny. So is A Diary of a Nobody - a Victorian Victor Meldrew.

I'm trying to read 50 books in 2008 too

So far I'm on my 22nd; "Surfacing" by Margaret Atwood.  I don't know whether to 'cheat' slightly by looking for skinner books... ?
Or would I only be cheating myself ?

Skinny books can be just as enjoyable

I haven't read any books yet this year... how bad is that!

Don't be deceived by skinny books!! It took me a while to get through one of them, can't remember which one now - The Thirty-Nine Steps - and there I was thinking it'd be a quick read.

Quality not quantity I say!

The same happened with me and The 39 Steps ~ in fact I'm not sure if I ever finished it

Some of the political stuff just went over my head. I'm not into politics at all. A great book though, read it exactly a year ago, I'm really fond of it

I saw a play of The Thirty Nine Steps last month - it made me want to read the book again ! They'd made it quite slapstick and humorous in places.
