I read this book at the start of the year and it is fantastic! It made me cry - twice!

I does take a bit of getting into, the beginning is a little disjointed, but it all comes together so persevere. Looking forward to hearing what everyone else thought about it.

I have tried to read this before and gave up, but am encouraged by other people saying how good it gets.  Seeing as I love Greece so much, especially Kefalonia (will be there in 7 weeks - hooray!), I really must try it again.

I have tried 3 times (at least) and failed to read it-so it is my goal to complete it so I can join in the discussions!

I know a few people who tried it and hated it, but I picked it up in a charity shop last week expecting it to be this month's choice, so I'll give it a go.

I read this ages ago and liked it! If you've seen the film you have to totally put that out of your mind because it's nothing like it. Why ever they thought Nicholas Cage could be Captain Correlli is beyond me!

I'll give this one another go but I've tried twice before and just can't get very far...hopefully this will be third time lucky!

I have an abridged audio version of this and listened to it a while back. I can't remember much about it but I did think it was a very sweet story with sad and funny parts. And I thought the ending was lovely.

I have tried and failed yet again

I think what I didn't like is the use of long and unusual words just for the sake of it!  Plus it was just too detailed for me, too much war stuff and it would have taken a higher level of concentration than I am able to give it at the moment in order to finish it!

I just don't think it's my kind of book.

My copy arrived today.  I need to finish my current book, then read another for someone else and then I'll give it another try.

I found the first few chapters a bit trying, lots of dry description but now I have got past the first 50 pages it is now onto more of the story and characters (including speech!) and I am finding it easier, if that helps anyone!

I read this a couple of times, and really loved it. When I lent it to my mum I told her to skip the first chapter as it is so long winded and I believe puts people off this great book. I haven't got time to reread it at the mo but I'm sure at some point I'll pick it up again.

I've given up too!   I read the first 10 or so chapters and just found myself re-reading to try and absorb the meaning - that's not what I want from a book.

That does help Sarah, thanks! I'm on page 30 or so at the moment and I want to like it and keep going, but it is so long winded! I'm going to try and get really stuck into it this evening.

I'm still going, on page 300 or so now so I'm sure I'll finish (I'm not very good at giving up on books anyway, which is sometimes a bad thing).

While further on there is the odd bit that is hard going, generally it is much better and the storyline is developing slowly and very cleverly. There are some lovely uses of words and wonderful phrases, I will try and pick some out when I comment at the end.

Anyone else still going with this one?

I read this about 8 years ago and really enjoyed it. I don't remember all your criticisms of it ...maybe i've blocked them out ..LOL.
I've even kept my copy to re-read.
But his Birds Without Wings wasn't as good, lots of Turkish history and characters and plot were a lot weaker than Corelli.
I still have his trilogy to read.

I read it years ago and after I got into the main story, I liked it.  I thought the ending was really good. I have also read Birds without Wings which I though was as just as good except for some of the war chapters.  I think the author gets a bit carried away in both books with the smaller details of war but does bring to the fore how war affects people. In Birds a comment about modern day Turkey really brings home the pointlessness of war. I am good to try and find time to read CCM again as I can't remember the finer details now.

Good luck with the trilogy seanat, I have read them all. I liked them but CCM is very different. The ones in the trilogy become a bit surreal at times but are enjoyable (and I don't do fantasy at all)
