Discuss here your thoughts on the book once you have read it. Did you (not) enjoy it? Anything that struck you or maybe someone else could help if you have a question? We're not really looking for in depth discussions... just tell us what you think of it!

For those who have read the book, please choose a star rating based on how much you liked it.

If you do have something to post that may ruin the plot for others, please remember to use the spoiler function (Details: http://risibookclub.myfreeforum.org/ftopic12.php)

This is my reading group choice for May/June so I need to buy a copy first and then will have to hold off reading it until nearer the time, but looking forward to it.  I think it will be easy to track down compared to the next read I am concentrating on sourcing at the moment (To War with Whitaker: The Wartime Diaries of the Countess Ranfurly), which seems to be out of print!

I read Shadow Of The Wind around three years ago, and I think of it at least once a month.
It is in my Top Three books ever!

It's a beautiful story - and loses nothing at all in the translation.  The description of Barcelona alone make me want to read it again, let alone the plot and the wonderful characters.
I have the follow up on pre-order from Waterstone's.

I like a good mystery, and history, so I was looking forward to reading this. I had the abridged audio version of this so no doubt a lot of the descriptions got lost in the editing but all in all I thought the story was ok. I just thought Daniel was too young to work as a main character. How many fifteen year olds are that self aware and mature? It just didn't feel right to me.

Spoiler:

And is it just me or do girls in Spain get pregnant very easily (and discover they're pregnant remarkably quickly)???? It just seemed a little too easy, convenient for the author but not necessarily realistic.

I don't know what happens to Clara in the unabridged version but in my audiobook she just stops being mentioned which is weird because she's set up as such an important character in the opening chapters.

I liked the linking of Daniel and Julian's stories by the pen. But why oh why did Daniel have to go all twee and name his son after him? Pass the bucket please...

So, not bad I guess but why it was so raved about I'm not sure.

I'm halfway through and not sure if I'm enjoying it or not. It reminds me so much of The Dumas Club which I didn't enjoy. I agree with Nic that some of it doesn't seem plausible - a couple of things happened
Spoiler:

like Daniel suddenly finding the key to the locked room in the Fortuny apartment

that seemed too convenient. I like the characters of Daniel, his father and Fermin, but finding it another one of those Da Vinci type code books. I've also thought that Daniel seems much older than his years and questioned it. I don't know, the plot just hasn't grabbed me at all, although I like the characters.

Sorry to sound so despondent.

Finished the book. I feel awful saying this, but I don't get the hype either. It was an ok read. The plot, I felt, was something I couldn't take seriously, predictable, and the writing often cheesy - perhaps something was lost in translation? I liked the cosiness of the scenes when it was raining outside and I loved the descriptions of Daniel, his father and Fermin working alongside one another in comfortable silences in the bookshop. I found the second half more enjoyable. It picked up with Nuria Monfort's story. I got quite into the passages typed in italics and enjoyed Julian's history more than the characters' pursuit of it.
Spoiler:

One thing that got me was how all the women in the book seemed downtrodden, used, and totally disrespected the men who blended into one another as bottom-pinching pervs. It seemed to me that the women were all punished for something and no good could come of them. Is this part of the Gothic nature of the novel or something?

I read this one a while back. I thought it was okay but not as good as I was expecting.

I've given up on this.  I just couldn't get into it at all.     Will try The Secret Scripture now.

Started this a couple of days ago for my June reading group. Finding it quite hard to get into - only read 50 or so pages and it has been a struggle. Thought I would come and see what everyone else thought and I am quite relieved to see that I am not on my own in finding it tough. Will stick to it for a bit longer, I might not finish, but I need to be able to contribute something at reading group!

I am about 12 chapters in and loving this so far.  I think the fact it is set in Barcelona helps (my spiritual home!), and I love the atmospheric descriptions.  Not sure about the characters yet, but will see how it goes as the book goes on.
