I really enjoy this film. Before watching I wasn't sure about Judi Dench as Barbara Covett but she was brilliant. The only character I wasn't really convinced by was Andrew Simpson who played Steven Connolly. Some how I just couldn't see Sheba falling for him. This was a rare film that really brought the book to life for me and I would watch it again. Even Mr BF enjoyed it although it isn't his sort of film.
Five stars.

I enjoyed the film. I had read the book, I rarely read a book after seeing a film as I tend to then find the book disappointing. I thought Judi Dench was brilliant, and Sheba fairly credible. I didn't find the film as atmospheric as the book but they rarely are - I think the pictures we conjure up in our heads are often more alive.
I took my dh to this and he seemed to enjoy it too, despite it not being his kind of think. All in all not a bad film version IMO!

I really enjoyed this film. I haven't read the book, so can't comment on the comparisons between the book and the film, however as a film in it's own right I liked it.
I loved Judi Dench, not her usual type of role, but thought she was brilliant. Cate Blanchet was great as Sheba as well.
I also liked the fact that it wasn't a long film! It moved along swiftly and didn't leave you feeling like it was padded out at all.
All in all 4 stars! _________________ Currently Reading:
I haven't read the book but I thought the film was pretty good. Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett are always solid in anything. _________________ Currently reading - Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
I found the film quite enjoyable overall but it probably isn't one that I'd watch again. I thought Judi Dench was great as Barbara, just how I imagined she'd be(but then again, because the film had just come out when I read the book I kept imagining Judi's voice as I was reading anyway). Like Blueflower though, I wasn't convinced by the actor who played Steven Connolly. Although the character is supposed to be young, I just thought he looked too young, and I wasn't convinced that Sheba would fall for him. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I really enjoyed this film - watched it a while back when it was released at the cinema. I thought I'd post this because it was one of those rare occasions that I actually enjoyed the film more than the book.
I remember when I read the book thinking 'this will be a better film'. I actually thought the director did well to chose the actor that played 'Steven' because he looked too young. I think this was deliberate and helped the audience to feel this was more a 'scandel' than a just another lustful affair.
Judi Dench was amazing as ever and, unlike in the book, I found her character the most intriguing.[/b] _________________ My Swap List

I watched this the other day and although I enjoyed it wasn't there loads missing? I read the book ages ago so maybe I've not remembered it right but the ending seemed very rushed. I gave it 3 stars...

Truth is stranger that fiction - have you seen in the news about the female tennis coach in court for seducing a 13 year girl?
Yes, I saw this ... it reminded me of this book/film and must admit I found myself questioning whether I'd heard it right when they said a female teacher with a female pupil (almost like it would have been more acceptable with a male pupil, lol!) _________________ My Swap List

Finally got round to watching it and really enjoyed it. Excellent acting. Couldn't help but picture Judi Dench as Barbara whilst reading the book as think she is perfect for the role.
Spoiler:
I liked how, at the end, Barbara says I used to know Sheba. I like to think Sheba escaped her clutches after her time in prison.
Incidentally, the woman on the bench at the end of the film, I'm sure she's James McAvoy's wife. Lucky girl _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Just watched this the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it, my only gripe is that I didn't think that Andrew Simpson was quite right as Connolly. I wish I could pinpoint what it is that makes me feel this way, but after reading the book I just pictured him different to how he is in the film. Lisa x
