I didn't chose this in the poll, but my library had a copy so I thought I'd give it a try- I can't remember what I voted for instead.

I was able to read it really quickly.  Not necessarily because I was gripped by it, it was just an easy read.

My OH was amused when looking at the list of other books Hoffman has written he saw 'Practical Magic' - definetly not my kind of film.  As such, it was not really my kind of book ~ I've never really liked Magical Realism and have previoulsy given up on both 100 years of solitude, and The house of the spirits.

Is there another Babbler who can open my eyes to the appeal of this genre?

Oh dear!   I've given up on this one - I got about 50 pages into it and it was doing nothing for me at all.  I really wasnt enjoying it.  I've always enjoyed her books in the past but just didnt like this.

I feel a bit bad because I nominated this one!

Mel - I'll get it off to you ASAP - I hope you get on better with it!

How come you gave up on it?
I didn't think it was great, but on the other hand not so bad as to abandon it

Are her other books quite different ?

I gave up because I just wasnt enjoying it - the characters were annoying me - I have so many books on TBR, and life is far too short to carry on with a book I dont look forward to picking up.
The other books of Alice Hoffman that I have read were very different - my favourite so far has been Here On Earth which is very similar story to Wuthering Heights.

I'm going to give this one 3 stars. I was a fairly easy read but it lacked something for me. Perhaps because it didn't really have much of a story line?
Thank you for lending it to me Anne, should I send it straight back to you or is it going onto someone else?

I watched Far From Heaven last Friday, which reminded me of Seventh Heaven .

Apart from Norah being divorced, and maybe the fat lady who just walks out of her house one day there is nothing really contraversial in the book ...?

At least Far From Heaven touches on racial prejudice and closeted homosexuality.

It seems that I am one of the few who enjoyed reading this book.  It was an easy fast read, but haunting.  Alice Hoffman has an ability to see darkness in the ordinaryness of life and adds a slightly chilling supernatural element to it.  I was a young girl during this time of history and grew up in a neighbourhood similar to what she describes here (houses weren't exactly the same of course, but you get the idea), although of course in a much more positive light.

Nora seems like a woman out of a future time put back into a time and place where her behavior is appalling, but quite ordinary by today's standards.

Hoffman seems to weave in hope in the most unexpected places and despair where we expect to find hope and happiness.  I think she is a very talented writer.
