I couldn't decide whether it was becuase i loved the book too much or if the film just wasn't for me, i just seemed to find it very slow. But I do admit once I've read the book its very rare I enjoy the film, even when i know its going to be different and try and see it as just a film it rarely seems to work for me _________________ Currently Reading: Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen |

I'm the same, Ronnie, don't expect it to be the same. Like to think it's based on the book, but am still disappointed if they change anything, which doesn't make sense haha. Yes I'm talking to you Mr Madden of Captain Corelli fame. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Path to the Silent Country - Lynne Reid Banks - 8/10 - great easy read although of course I cried, softy that I am. And yes, of course, I knew that she died, I'm just a born blubber..
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer - 10/10 - must get my head down and review this. It's been quite a while since I've read such a different book which also succeeded in moving me so much. _________________ Currently reading - The Italian Boy - Murder and Grave Robbery in 1830s London - Sarah Wise |

Here's my August books...
The Summerhouse Trilogy by Alice Thomas Ellis Great! Very caustic wit.
The Ordeal of Elizabeth Marsh by Linda Colley Really interesting and well written biography.
The Good, Plain Cook by Bethan Roberts ok..but not as good as I wanted it to be.
Audrey, Wait by Robin Benway Really funny young adult novel about the pitfalls of celebrity and being a teenager etc.
The Scandal of the Season by Sophie Gee I have been waiting for this to come out for ages so I had high hopes and sadly it did not live up to them. It was boring and not as good as I expected it to be.
The Crowded Street by Winifred Holtby Loved it!
The Chalet School and Robin by Caroline German A fill-in Chalet school book about my favourite character.
The Angry Tide by Winston Graham No. 7 of The Poldark series.

In August I have only read two books, which is a little disappointing.
1. The Bourne Identity, Robert Ludlum; I guess this was a whopper-
2. 1984, George Orwell[/b] _________________ Current reading: The Last Temptation, Val McDermid ~ 40 @2009

August was a pretty good month for me, and I managed 3 from the 1001 list.
Oranges are not the only Fruit - Jeanette Winterson - I enjoyed this one, 7/10
Neve Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro - Probably not as great as I thought it might be. However a plot that has stayed with me and I still think about. 7/10
Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood - Took me a while to get into it, but once it got going I loved it! Great interwoven plot. 8/10
One City - Alexander McCall Smith and others - 3 short stories written by 3 different authors. All set in Edinburgh and the book raises money for the One City charity in Edinburgh. A worthwhile read. 8/10
The Breadwinner Collection - Deborah Ellis - all 3 short stories in one volume. Set in Afghanistan but from the point of view of children. Aimed at young adults but I still found it to be insightful reading. 9/10 _________________ Currently Reading:
The Moonlit Cage - Linda Holeman

A good month for me with some great reads:
The Various Flavours of Coffee by Anthony Capella - a different direction for this author, and although very different to The Food Of Love, I really enjoyed it. The 20 year story of a London cad who travels the world.
The Miracle of Grace by Kate Kerrigan - another great read from this author. The story of an adult woman and her relationship with her mother who has been diagnosed with cancer - although emotional in places, it's very uplifting and funny in others.
The Diving Bell And The Butterfly by Jean Dominque Bauby - the memoir of a journalist left paralysed by a massive stroke. An OK read but nothing special I thought.
I Lick My Cheese by Oonagh O Hagan - a collection of notes left by and for flat-mates. Hilariously funny in parts - a great gift for someone.
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton - I enjoyed this one more than The House At Riverton. A really haunting and beautiful story about searching for identity.
The Nine Lives of a Dysfunctional Cat by Steven Appleby - a very short cartoon book about a cat. Funny and so familiar to all cat owners.
The White Room by Karen Maitland - a short novel set sometime in the future in the UK. Quite disturbing and bleak in parts.
Rosewater And Soda Bread by Marsha Mehran - the follow up to the wonderful Pomegranate Soup. Re-visiting the Aminpour sisters and their cafe in a sleepy Irish town.
The Ghost And Mrs McClure by Alice Kimberly - a detective story with a twist and set in a bookshop. A cosy, easy to read mystery story that I enjoyed
No Time For Goodbye by Linwood Barclay - an interesting and clever thriller. I found it a bit too simple and it didnt grip me as much as I expected.
Eating For England by Nigel Slater - a great book for food fans - and one to dip in and out of. Nigel Slater looks at the delights and eccentricities of British Food.
Newes From The Dead by Mary Hooper - a wonderful, magical historical tale. The story of an innocent 16 year old who is hung for infanticide in 17th Century Britain.
Death Wore White by Jim Kelly - a review book from Penguin and my first by this author. A thriller/detective novel set in a snow storm in Norfolk. Easy to read and quite thrilling in places. I enjoyed this
Apricots On The Nile by Colette Rossant - a memoir with recipes. Follows the authors life from Eygpt, Paris and New York.
The Buffalo Soldier by Chris Bohjalian - really excellent novel set in Vermont, USA. About a couple who foster a black child after their own daughters drown in a flood. _________________ Currently reading: The Tent The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy and Granny The Pag by Nina Bawden

Here are mine for this month:
Addition – Toni Jordan - good little book, an interesting look at eccentricity 7/10
Station X – Michael Smith - a non fiction book about Bletchley Park, where the enigma code was broken during WWII. I have read and enjoyed Enigma, Robert Harris's fictionalised version and used to live very nearby so was interested in this one. A bit technical in parts, but I didn't need to know exactly how the code worked. 8/10
The Journal of Dora Damage – Belinda Starling - you've probably all heard good things about this one and I'm not going to disagree. A great book, I did guess parts but since it's not a mystery that didn't spoil it. My book of the month, 9/10
The Uncommon Reader – Alan Bennett totally not the kind of thing I would usually chose this was very kindly given to me by Elaine (dingsy) at the Exeter RISI meet. I loved it! Only short at 120 pages but great imagination in subject matter - it's about the Queen discovering a mobile library that visits her "home" and how she borrows a book to be polite and ends up engrossed in reading. Funny too! I would recommend this one 9/10
Lock 14 - Georges Simenon - another short book, one of a set of Maigret novels lent to me. A detective story but not the modern gory sort, quite a complex plot. I shall read more of them. 7/10 |

The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian 8/10 - enjoyed this story of a homeless man and how he might have gotten that way.
The White Room by Karen Maitland 7/10 - bleak future shown through the eyes of woman looked in the white room and how she came to be there.
Murder Most Fab by Julian Clary 7/10 - fun romp.
Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picoult 9/10 - my first by her that didnt have a court scene, enjoyed it .
The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen 7/10 - good read but i do feel her use of magic is a bit cynical sometimes..let's throw a bit in cos women like it. She's no Joanne Harris.
The Island by Victoria Hislop 6/10 - thought i'd love this with it having a Greek island as a background, but found the writing so dry, like a history lesson there were just so many facts the story didnt flow and i never bonded with the characters.
Are you Experienced? by William Sutcliffe 7/10 - funny look at taking a year out to backpack in India and how it's now become so obligatory even though no one can really experience anything as they all do the exact same thing and never meet an Indian.
The World Unseen by Shamim Sarif 8/10 - loved this. Set in 1950's SA.
The Mapmaker's Opera by Bea Gonzalez 6/10 - enjoyed the first half but then it just drifted a bit and failed to deliver.
The Little House by Philippa Gregory 7/10 - don't like how her non-historical books are so pompous, but ok read.
The Private Lives of Pippa Lee by Rebecca West 6/10 - ok read but forgetable.
The Darkness of Wallis Simpson by Rose Tremain 4/10- only really liked the first short story about Mrs Simpson.
The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett 5/10 - ok read |
