Newes from the Dead by Mary Hooper
This is classed as a children's book (though not for young children), and is a really good story based on a true event. Scared me to death - just don't do an autopsy |

I loved this Gwen - I think it may be one of my top books of the year. I have two more of her books on TBR. _________________ Currently reading: The Tent The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy and Granny The Pag by Nina Bawden

Oh I loved Newes from the Dead. I like Mary Hooper novels. She nearly always writes historical fiction for teens but they're quite engrossing. The other one I really like was At the Sign of the Sugared Plum and the follow on Petals in the Ashes and a stand-alone one called The Remarkable Life and Times of Eliza Rose.
Ok here's my September reads so far....
Esther Waters by George Moore Great little known classic about a young serving girl who falls pregnant and her attempts through life to do the right thing for her child.
Girl in a Blue Dress by Gaynor Arnold pretty good historical novel based on the life of Catherine Dickens...made me think Charles Dickens must have been an awful man to live with!
Angel by Elizabeth Taylor Enjoyed this well written even though Angel must be one of the hardest characters to like I've ever read. Been made into a film so eager to read it before I see the film.
A Family and a Fortune by Ivy Compton-Burnett Never read any ICB before. I found it a little hard going at first but getting used to her style and now quite enjoying it.
Tess of the D'ubervilles by Thomas Hardy - I've read other Hardy novels but funnily enough not this one til now and I wanted to read it before I watched the adaptation. I loved the novel and I can't believe I waited so long to read it! By far my favourite Hardy novel!
The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett - Excellent, funny, subversive read.

I have just finished Pride and Prejudice and loved every word of it! I have spent years avoiding all the films etc as I was determined to read the book first and I didn't want to know all the plot before I'd read it and I am so glad I did wait. I just loved it!! _________________ Currently Reading: Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen |

I've just finished The Gathering by Anne Enright and am currently reading Arlington Park by Rachel Cusk.
I have these on my pile to read
Lines of Life (poems collected by Germaine Greer)
Austerity Britain - Smoke in the Valley by David Kynaston (history of post war Britain)
Must also look out for the new Neil Cross - saw it reviewed in the paper this weekend. I love all his books!! |

| Forgot to say that I loved The Gathering, and that the Rachel Cusk is looking like another winner. It's about a day in the lives of a group of different women from the same suburb and probably everyone could find a reflection of themselves in one of the women. |

I'm always the last to read the 'must read' books!!
And this month I have read 'The Bookseller of Kabul' by Åsne Seierstad. I heard an article on the radio about how the actual bookseller was less than happy about the final novel, so I had to go hunt down a copy on RISI.
I have to say, that apart from opening my eyes to what the women put up with, I did not find it all that amazing.
Most likely it was over hyped in my imagination before I started!!
I'm now reading The Lovely Bones......and I can't put it down - or get it out of my head when I'm not actually reading it.
Poignant, Sad & Brilliant.

You are not alone in being the last to read the must haves - I have both these but haven't read them yet. |

Such a Long Journey by Rohinton Mistry (didn't like this as much as A Fine Balance)
PS I Love you
The Pact Jodi Picoult These two I got as easy holiday reads and the first one was a complete disappointment, The Pact was OK, but not great.
Here On Earth by Aice Hoffman, Really good.
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez was excellent as long as you a patient with his narrative style...which I got tired of in 1000 Year of Solitude. This was better.[/quote] _________________ Currently reading: Love in the Time of Cholera |

Sugarcoated by Catherine Forde .......gave up
The Diplomat's Wife by Pam Jenoff 7/10 - enjoyed it more than Kommandant's Girl, but still quite unrealistic.
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday 7/10 - preferred his second book Inheritance of Wilberforce, ok read.
Addition by Toni Jordan 9/10 - surprised me, really enjoyed the humour in this.
The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper 10/10 - excellent read, my favourite by him.
Living with the Truth by Jim Murdoch ....gave up
The Other by Chris Cleave 9/10 - loved this, really makes you think, how far would you be willing to go to help another.
Recipes for Cherubs by Babs Horton 7/10 - ok read
Parnassus on Wheels by Christopher Morley 9/10 - lovely cosy tale of a traveling bookshop.
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill 5/10 - very sluggish horror by Stephen Kings son.
The Dressmaker by E.Birkelund Overbeck 6/10 - slow paced love story, the romance never quite convinced me.
Firmin' by Sam Savage ........gave up
Fractured by Karin Slaughter 7/10 - good read
Down River by John Hart 8/10 - enjoyed this, very atmospheric and an end i never saw coming.
The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly 8/10 - very different, enjoyed it. aboy escapes into a dark fairytale world.
Play Dead by Richard Montanari 7/10 - ok, first half was a bit lifeless i thought but it ended well.
Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult 7/10 - a bit sentimental, ideas very reminicent of Green Mile/Keeping Faith. Not her best.
