The Abortionist's daughter - Elizabeth Hyde
I don't know what I was expecting when I got this from the library, but it's a brilliant read. It's not often I read a book in a week these days, but I did with this one. I did notice a few typos & errors though!!

Broken Biscuits ~ Liz Kettle. I found this good to start, a bit sluggish in the middle, but was great towards the end. 3.5/5. _________________ handmade by Laura Croxson |

Ok here's my August books so far...
White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi (didn't like this very much at all)
Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier (lovely novel)
Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant (Really really liked this!)
The White Queen by Philippa Gregory (Really really didn't like this)
The Outlander by Gil Adamson (a pretty good read...perhaps a bit long)
bit of a new books month for me which is unusual. |

Lots of quite quick reads this month -
The Case of the Missing Books - Ian Sansom 8/10 (light, amusing and a nice change)
White Tiger - Aravind Adiga 6/10
Fever Crumb - Philip Reeve 8/10 (prequel to the Mortal Engines Series. very readable whether or not the reader has read the original books. Perhaps aimed at a slightly younger age bracket than the original books)
Lifeblood - Tom Becker 8/10 (fast pace, very imaginative)
Friday Nights - Joanna Trollope 8/10 (very good story focusing on the lives of several women and their friendships. Would not class this as chick lit in the traditional sense. Yes it's about women in a less than desirable place in their lives, their relationships with other women, men and their children, but it has some very astute observations, does not get sentimental with a slushy ending, but does, I thought, end very satisfactorily)
Destination Unknown - Agatha Christie 7/10 (My first Agatha Christie and very different to what I was expecting. I enjoyed this.)
Odd Fish and Englishmen - Sarah Francis 7/10 (Very quirky, but I did enjoy it)
La's Orchestra Saves the World - Alexander McCall Smith 7/10 (Enjoyed this story very much, not quite as much perhaps as some of his other work however)
Keeping the Dead - Tess Gerritsen 7/10 (Very readable thriller, with an interesting egyptology slant)
Scarpetta - Patricia Cornwell 6/10 (Better than some of her more recent work, but just okay really) |

Three Bags Full - Leonie Swann 7/10
Sheep turn into detectives to solve the murder of their shepherd. Certainly different to the usual detective story! However, you have to forget what you know about sheep and sheep farming! I found the description of the second flock of sheep that came into the story a bit sad - could turn the reader into a vegetarian.
The Solitude of Prime Numbers – Paolo Girdano 7/10
What attached me to this book –
The Title
The rave reviews
Or the rather handsome young Italian author?
Started well but was a bit too deep for me. The author is a working on a doctorate in particle physics! It is a ‘stunning meditation on aloneness, love and the weight of childhood experience’. I think it is one of those books I will like better after a day or two when I have given it some thought.
Still Alice 9/10
Great book and gives a really good insight to the cruel way that Alzheimer’s steals your mind. It is a very moving book not only of Alice herself but her family’s reactions as well. I It loses points because it is an American book so of course it describes the American health system. I read it as I have three family members who are in various stages of the disease and another one heading down that route and I would recommend it to anyone who has a family member with the disease.
True Murder
Started this but lost interest after the first chapter. Didn’t finish it. |

I managed one book in August:
Burning Bright - Tracey Chevalier.
I liked this one. It's my first by this author and will definitely look out for more from her. _________________ Currently Reading:

I enjoyed Burning Bright too Heather, but I've read a few and I'd not say it's my favourite. I have The Lady and the Unicorn on my TBR
