Things I Want my Daughter to Know by Elizabeth Noble 7/10 - ok read, not my favourite of hers as i'm a bit allergic to sentiment

Dancing with Eva by Alan Judd 8/10 - great book , Eva Braun's old secretaryand survivor of that bunker, is visited by someone from her past dredging up old memories.

The Servants
by Michael Marshall Smith 7/10 - ok ghost story.

The Sound of Butterflies by Rachael King 8/10 - really enjoyed this slow read, a dual narrative that alternatively follows a butterfly collector to the Amazon and also his wife in London who has to dead with his unexplained muteness on his return. What happened out there?

Difficult Daughters by Manju Kapur 6/10 - Spanning three generations, this story centres around a woman born at the turn of the 20th century into an austere Punjabi family. It tells of an illicit affair and its wider political and social implications - not least the vexed issue, for Indian women, of marriage versus education.

Too Close to Home
by Linwood Barclay 6/10 - lacked the suspense of No Time for Goodbye for me, but ok read.

Testimony by Anita Shreve 9/10 - great read, but did get a little confused with all the characters. One moment of  madness can change everything irrevocably.

Earth and Ashes
by Atiq Rahimi 2/10 - almost unreadable, maybe i got lost in translation.

Shadow Man by Cody McFadyen 7/10 - good thriller and start to series.

The Good Plain Cook by Bethan Roberts 7/10 - good read, a young cook joins a liberal household in the 1950's.

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes 9/10 - great read, highly original.

Silent in the Grave by Deanna Rayburn 7/10 - good read but not much of a murder mystery, few suspects and rushed at the end.

The Behaviour Of Moths by Poppy Adams 10/10 - excellent read, another involving lepidoptera (butterflys/moths), learning something every day... lol. A sisters' return to the family home stirs up old memories and secrets for the sister left behind.

The Language of Others by Clare Morrall 9/10 - loved this too, about a woman who has always had trouble fitting , narative jumps easily between her present and childhood.

Not so many this month:

Quite Ugly One Morning – Christopher Brookmyre. 8/10 I enjoyed this, the first of his I've read. A murderer tracked down by a reporter whose methods are somewhat questionnable!

A Secret History – Donna Tartt 7/10 I've put comments in the thread for Nov reads, a bit slow for me, and one sided.

Sea of Dreams – Susan Sallis 9/10 A very light read with the predictable happy ending but no less enjoyable for that. And a seasonable theme.

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher – Kate Summerscale  7/10 I was expecting too much from this, and it was more academic than I was expecting with lots of quotes. However, still a good read, and an interesting explanation of the origin of the british detective, both in life and in fiction.

Another very slow reading month for me.

The Miracle at Speedy Motors - Alexander McCall Smith - 10/10 I love this series from this author. Just a lovely story.

Catching up with Wild Swans and that's it!!

Delicious by Nicky Pellegrino :  I really enjoyed this romp through Italy - lots of food, sun and love.

Mary Reilly by Valerie Martin
: An interesting take on the Dr Jekyll story as told by his maid Mary.  I didnt enjoy it as much as other books by her that I have read.

Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick
:  A Young Adult's novel set in the not too distant future.  The British Isles is flooded due to global warming and the story follows a young girl Zoe as she searches for her parents. Excellently written and maybe a warning?

Faith by Lesley Pearse : Lesley Pearse is one of my all-time favourite authors and this one didnt let me down.  The story of Laura, in prison and protesting her innocence - excellent.

No Dress Rehearsal by Marian Keyes :  A very short story written for the Open Door series.  Very well written with Marian Keyes' usual humour.

This Charming Man by Marian Keyes :  I enjoyed every page of this - written from four different women's viewpoints, and all very different.  Some laugh out loud humour with a very serious subject.

Mudbound by Hillary Jordan
:  This book is fabulous - my favourite this month.  I cried so much!

Cupboard Love by Laura Lockington
:  A 'foodie' memoir and very well written.  I loved the way that Laura associates people with food - excellently written.

The Book Of Unholy Mischief by Elle Newmark
:  What a find!  The debut novel from an American author, this one is due to be published early next year.  Set in Venice during the early 1500s this was a magical story following Luciano from the slums to the grand kitchens.

More Cat Tales From Moon Cottage by Marilyn Edwards
: The second of her books about her cats.  Not as sad as the first in the series but still a lovely tale that will put a smile on any cat lover's face.

Body Surfing by Anita Shreve
: It's years since I read an Anita Shreve.  At first this annoyed me but I was soon sucked in by the storyline - nothing sensational at all, but a simple enough story.

Address Unknown by Kressmann Taylor
:  A very short novel originally published in 1938 and banned in N azi Germany.  A series of letters between an American Jew and his German friend who has just left the USA and returned to Germany.  This is shocking and heart-breaking and shows just how a nation can become transfixed by one man.  A must read.

Helen Keller's Teacher by Mickie Davidson :  I first read this book 35 years ago and enjoyed it just as much this time.  When I was a little girl I was obsessed with Helen Keller and devoured any books about her.  This is the story of Annie Sullivan - a young partially blind girl who became Helen's teacher.  Inspirational and beautiful story.

I gave up on two books this month;  My Lover's Lover by Maggie O Farrell and Inkheart by Cornelia Funke.

Little Bird by Camilla Way
Disappointing read, after enjoying The Dead of Summer

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
I thought this was a very moving read, but it lacked something for me.  I have a problem with translations and so I think that might be the reason - I find most translations very stilted.

The Rabbit Factory by Marshall Karp
This was fab!  Excellent crime novel, but with an unusual storyline set around a theme park in LA.  Highly recommended.

Pies and Prejudice by Stuart Maconie
I skimmed through most of this (apart from the bit about Sheffield).  It was reasonably interesting in parts I suppose, but also quite slow.

The Shakespeare Secret by J.L. Carrell
I had no idea what was going on for most of this book - very confusing.  I think it would have helped to have more background knowledge on Shakespeare's life.

Confessions of a Slummy Mummy - Fiona Neal 8/10
Ex Libris - Confessions of a Book Lover - Anne Fadiman 9.5/10
Never Look Back - Lesley Pearse - 9.5/10
Mudbound - Hillary Jordan 9/10
9 Parts of Desire - A Study of Islamic Women - Geraldine Brooks  8/10
The Undomestic Goddess - Sophie Kinsella 7/10
Things I want My Daughters to Know - Elizabeth Noble 6/10
Inkheart - Cornelia Funke 9.5/10

Some great reads for me this month, I'm glad I threw a little chick lit into the mix for the first time ever as it kept my reading juices flowing - I think I might have seized up otherwise....

I like your list Treez and it looks like you had a good month

I have Ex Libris and Mudbound on my TBR pile.
Never Look Back is my absolute favourite Lesley Pearse book.
I loved Things I Want my Daughters to Know, and I'm reading Inkheart at the moment.

I have also read The Undomestic Goddess, but was a little underwhelmed by it.
