Here's my list for September, not a bad month in all!
A Quiet Belief in Angels - R J Ellory - 7/10 Took me a long time to get through this, felt like hard work but overall enjoyed it in the end. Will try another of his.
A Kingson Lacy Childhood: Reminisences of Viola Bankes - 8/10 Little book about the childhood of a member of the aristocracy who grew up locally. The house is now the property of the National Trust. Fascinating portrait, including details like the fact that the children were not told of their father's death until a servant let it slip a year later! Just wasn't the done thing apparently!
The Return - Victoria Hislop 5/10 The overall story wasn't bad but it was just too long and drawn out. The introductory section was 150 pages. And it felt like it was written to be a set length, 150 page beginning, 300 was the middle and a 500 page book in total, almost exactly everytime.
4.50 From Paddington - Agatha Christie 8/10 enjoyed this trip back to my teenage reading material. It was probably a re-read but I certainly didn't remember it. Found it hard to put down, and I will re-read some more. I have one with a seasonal theme that'll be on the pile for December!
Pay it Forward - Catherine Ryan Hyde - 9/10 Loved this. A lovely concept for a book, doing good turns but asking recipients not to pay back but to pay forward to others. Avoided being slushy and kept the storyline interesting. Will seek out her others now.
The Road Home - Rose Tremain - 9/10 Loved this too, a story of an immigrant worker and his experiences of contemporary Britain. Makes you think a bit about a side of life many of us don't get involved in. And a nice comparison with Two Caravans by Mariana Lewcka that I read last month on a similar theme. |

Three Weeks to Say Goodbye by C J Box. 3/10
Got this from Waterstones to review but it wasn’t my sort of book. The story started quite well about a couple who were adopting a baby then just before the adoption became final the natural father turns up and wants his daughter back – or rather his father who is a renowned judge wants his granddaughter. The couple are given 3 weeks to say goodbye………. But things get very nasty.
Dark Fire - C J Sansom 9/10
Second Shardlake book and just as good as Dissolution. C J Sansom makes you feel you are living and breathing the Tudor way of life. Excellent detail.
The Little Stranger – Sarah Hall 9/10
Another winner from Sarah. Not her best but still excellent. Set just after the second world war when the old class ridden England was adjusting to a new and different way of life. The National Health Service was about to come along and builders were busy building new homes for the working classes. Hundreds Hall a beautiful Edwardian mansion before the war is crumbling and decaying while what’s left of the family try to hold on to their position and home. The family doctor came from a working class family but never felt he was truly accepted into this middle class profession. The story has a slow start but builds into – well you will have to make your own mind up when you have read the book. |

My one September read was:
Girls of Riyadh - Rajaa Alsanea
An interesting insight into the lives of young women in Saudi Arabia, but not as brilliant as some of the other books I've read before set in this area of the world.
