Has anyone seen the 1981 Granada TV series?

I remember it being aired but didn't watch it as I was 8 at the time (busy with my Lady Diana scrapbook). Although I must have taken it in as can picture it well and always think of Jeremy Irons when I think of the show (however didn't picture him as Charles Ryder whilst reading the book).

I'm tempted to buy it on Amazon as it has rave reviews. Not tempted to buy the DVD of the 2008 film though. I just can't picture Ben Whishaw as Sebastian and apparently there are scenes that aren't in the book. If they do that, I think they should change the title of the film and say it's based on the book or something.

I saw it and loved it when it was shown in 1981 but I was 17 at the time and it's a long long time ago now.  How much is it and where Glynis?

I ordered it via our Play.com link. It's available on DVD (4 discs) at £13.99 (free delivery). It's a couple of pence cheaper on Amazon, but doesn't qualify for free delivery.

Excellent reviews everywhere I look so will look forward to this. 11 episodes!

Very reasonable price, Glynis.  I saw the latest BR movie in Tescos today on dvd but refrained from purchasing although I did pick up Notes on a Scandal for £5 - I loved the book so we'll see if the screen adaptation works as well for me.   Enjoy the BR set and let us know what you make of it.

Oh I enjoyed the Notes on a Scandal film too Treez, having read the book. I think Judi Dench and Bill Nighy were great in it. Enjoy.

And I too could be tempted by the Brideshead set at that price. There's so much rubbish on the tv at the moment and if I've a pile of ironing I like to watch tv and I could do that in 1 hour instalments. Must go have a look!

I really enjoyed the film of Notes on a Scandal, but I had not read the book so I think that can help sometimes.  I generally like anything with Judy Dench on the cast list and Bill Nighy was pretty good too.

Remember the original series of Brideshead Revisited being shown on TV way back when. I did not see it, but Anthony Andrews and Jeremy Irons stick in my mind as the actors associated with it.  Wanted to see the current film version but the showings were not compatible with my free time sans my guys (who were quite vocal in not wanting to see it).  I am hoping it is one of the next ones to come on my rental list.  Since I have not read this one either and not seen the earlier version, I am hoping I will just enjoy it without any preconceived ideas as to how it matches up to either book or 1981 TV series.

Will be interested to see what you make of the 2008 film, Karen, having not yet read the book or seen the TV series (you, not me!!).

I'd like to see it but want to watch the TV adaptation first, so will be intrigued as to how our opinions on the film compare.

I can understand why you would want to watch the TV version first Glynis if you have read the book first especially. There is much more chance of a faithful adaptation if you have serveral hours to cover it rather than a just two or so in a feature film. I think I might buck the trend and do it in reverse order!

I'm sure you'll love it just the same. Hope you do anyway! I don't want to give the characters up yet.

Great price for the DVDs Glynis. I checked HMV as I have a voucher and it's £40 on there (and the voucher is only £12   ) but do think I might be tempted.

As  there are a lot of Brideshead fans maybe we should consider Castle Howard for the annual get together.    They have a big exhibition of all the props and thing used when filming the TV series and now they have added the new film as well.  We went a few years ago it was quite a good day out and they were very helpful  when it came to assisting with my wheelchair.  In fact we got to see thing others don't as we had to take a different  route to everyone else at times.

That's a great idea Gwen! Would love to go. Isn't it in Yorkshire? To think I lived there all those years and didn't go.

Yes it is Yorkshire, can't just remember where but we were staying near Pickering I think.  It is often the case you don't visit places you live near to.  We don't go into the Lakes very often and haven't been to places like Wordsworth house.

I agree. Now I'm back in Shropshire after all these years I'm making more of an effort to get out and about here. So much I've yet to see despite being a Shropshire lass born and bred, and it's all beautiful.

Helps being able to drive now tho

Castle Howard is in North Yorkshire just off the A64 near Malton (used to live in Malton when first married and we often used to drive through the grounds on a weekend.)  Near to Pickering too, which has a bit of a castle and then over the moors to Fylingdales and down the other side into Whitby. Going the other way about 15 miles or so into York.

Camp Eden was being developed at around the time we were there, we left in 1990ish and I think it was open but had not been for long. Not sure if it is now. It's not somewhere we visited. We did manage a visit to Castle Howard before we left the area but we were more regular visitors to Fountains Abbey and Beningbrough Hall - probably because entry to the grounds was free and with a picnic we could have a cheap day out!
