What's Sula like Anne? Studied an excerpt at college many moons ago, wanted to read it but never did. Do you recommend it?

I really loved it Glynis, it's been on TBR for ages and I promised it to someone which spurred me on to read it.  I really understand why she is an award winning writer - it's a great read.  I have Beloved by her on TBR as well.

Beloved is fantastic, I highly recommend it, it's one of my favourite ever books.  I got Paradise the other day which I'm looking forward to.

Well done Amie! I have Dr Zhivago on my TBR but it's quite long so I've been avoiding it   !

I did find it hard going but it was worth persevering with.  I didn't like the way it kept meandering into philosophy, but the love story and the war story were great.

Read a second now, Brave New World - Aldous Huxley.

All in all a great read. I was expecting it to be a heavy read but it wasn't, it seems quite modern given that it is 40+ years old. Probably an 8/10 for me and I'm glad I read it (which was only because a friend passed it to me in a big bag of books so it was one from the list I already had - and not too long!!! 250 pgs)

I'm reading my first challenge book now, Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte. About 1/3 of the way in and loving it so far. I last read it about 10 years ago and it's almost like going back to it fresh.

My reading of Oliver Twist was coloured by the musical too.

I enjoyed Madame Bovary, I thought it was a lot easier to read than I was expecting.  I thought the middle dragged a bit but the beginning and end were great.  It wasn't as racy as it's reputation though, I don't know if my copy was a 'censored' one?!  I thought the characters were well rounded - my sympathy kept changing between them instead of it all being given to one.  I just wish I hadn't already known the ending from watching a tv version, it spoiled it a bit.

Just finished my 3rd 1001 book of the year - Silk by Alessandro Baricco - very short read but beautifully written and very moving, quite erotic at times too!

I haven't read any this year yet!    I think I will read The Crimson Petal and the WHite next - better just check it is on the list. Also want to read a 'classic' again soon - maybe Nicholas Nickelby as I was quite inspired when I visited the Dickens House Museum. If I could get myself off the internet I might be further on with the challenge
