I started The Accidental this morning, not sure it's going to be my type of book but it seems to be quite easy to read...

Even though...
Spoiler:

the ie's and etc's are going to wind me up really badly if it carries on through the book! It seems she has serious OCD too but since reading the first chapter I have been wondering about this stuff myself... oops!

I don't like it

I'm going to carry on for a bit longer, I've read three chapters so there's still time!

I just can't get into it, and not too keen on the writing style

I still struggling with this... think I'll give one more chapter a go and then possibly give it up! I agree about the writing style, it's a tad confusing.... I need simplicity.

Phew glad I'm not the only one, I'm going to have another go tonight to see if I can get into it.

I'm really sorry I've given up on this one, I just couldn't get into it. I found the writing style confusing. I'm going to try and get The Kite Runner now.

Shame I really thought I was going to enjoy this one.

I think I might be joining you, it's just not making me want to open it up and read it... The Kite Runner is a brilliant book, I'm sure you'll like that one.

2 stars for this one.

Spoiler:

I thought this too - serious OCD like tendencies. I nominated this book but I didn't enjoy it - I guess I don't fully understand its meaning.
I found Eve highly annoying - what an awful mother she is (and no, she gets no sympathy for her own rotten childhood). I do like the end though when she adopts Amber's tactics in America.

And speaking of Amber, I spent the whole novel trying to relate her somehow to the Smart family when all the time she really was a random stranger. But she made them face up to their demons I suppose - except Astrid I think.

I guess I just expected more of an ending to this - a nice no loose ends ending. But maybe thats the point of the novel, that no endings are neat and tidy but usually involve at lot of mess.

Lots of time to kill now till the next read. Gives me a chance to attack Mount TBR

Dare I ask the question, has anyone read this and liked this?? I've just got it out of the library and haven't started yet but I'm feeling a bit wary.

I did kind of.... but seemed to me to be saying a lot without actually saying anything at all.It struck me as a very literary kind of book which probably had lots of hidden depths and meaning but I didn't really get any of them and the plot just never really went anywhere and kind of ended all unresolved and there was very little descriptive mentions of Norfolk, its villages or Norwich which I was disappointed about because I wanted to spot the locations and go "I know there..."

three stars for me it was okay, not a keeper, but an interesting if uinformative read.

does any of that make sense?

I finished it and was relieved, though not for any of the characters, just that i'd finished it. SparkyMarky may have hit nail on head and all hidden depths passed me by also.
Writing from 4 different viewpoints was always going to be a challenging read but I never felt any empathy towards the principals.
Spoiler:

Then there were things like the trashing of an expensive video camera and complete lack of spine on anyone's part to confront the woman. I take the point made earlier that the end of the book is left unresolved, which is how life actually is.

So I did finish it but didn't enjoy it. Two stars from me.

I gave up on this two chapters in. Its not often I give up on a book but I just didn't like it and wasn't interested enough to want to pick the book up to see what happened next. It sounded interesting on the cover but sadly not for me.

I'm halfway through The Accidental. The narrative doesn't really go anywhere, it's not so much an action packed novel. Here are my thoughts so far...
Spoiler:

Reading it, I feel very much that I'm inside each of the characters' heads, looking at the world through their eyes. Not always a nice reading experience, I have to say. The stream-of-consciousness approach makes me feel as though MY head is stuffed with cotton wool - frustrating in places & not much going on. Magnus and all his '=' and x+y= Glynis falling asleep squared

Can't work out if Amber is real or imagined. She's a very ambiguous character. I like how she's described as the axis that keeps the bored family together. She spices up the holiday. I can really feel that everyone is bored on the holiday - especially through Astrid and her dull videoing of dull subjects. I was pleased when Amber chucked the camera off the bridge! I don't much like any of the characters in the novel. Michael really annoys me with his lecherous ways, but then have read his poetry bit in the middle and this shed light on his insecurities and weaknesses. It hasn't made me pity him. Ok he's academic, but apart from that he's pretty much a sad person. Amber is a challenge to him, and cos he can't have her, he's like a kid sulking about it.

Out of everyone, I think Amber is most therapeutic for Magnus!! Giving him a vent to release his tortured soul!!

Yes it does make sense Sparky

Spoiler:

I've found it interesting to read, but there's nothing in it that'll stay with me or make me think. I'm trying to work out the author's message. It just seems a novel about broken and disappointed people, and how someone (whether real or imagined) appears out of the blue & spices things up a bit for them. Masks their brokenness, if that makes sense. The characters make me feel disappointed too. I want them to pull themselves together and put a bit of zing back into their lives! A bit of zip instead of zzzzzzzzZZZzzzzz Have a go at enjoying life. The hot summer makes me feel drugged too. I'm not keen on Amber but at least she adds a bit of zest to the characters and stops them wallowing in negative thoughts (for a little while at least).

Apart from the characters, the writing style is interesting, but not a literary great for me. The author's having a crack at being original, and she certainly is innovative, but I don't think this is great storytelling. Not a keeper for me either.

Had to smile when I read this Amazon review on The Accidental:

Spoiler:

Quote:
This book sounded really interesting from the cover, however, it did not live up to the promises made. The storyline was weak and meandered without direction. It covered many styles of writing in an attempt to show off how clever the author was. These just got irritating and I actually skipped pages because I couldn't face reading them.
Really really don't understand why anyone would enjoy this book. The only saving grace was the writing was quite big and there weren't many pages!

Whilst reading it, I also wondered if Smith was attempting to be innovative in order to stand out. I wouldn't say the novel is confusing to read, I just haven't enjoyed being stuck inside the characters' heads so much. Felt a bit suffocating at times for me as the reader. I'm halfway through the book at the mo and it now needs a blast of fresh air to keep me reading on. Something now needs to give. A change of scene would be appreciated. As Sparky said, would be nice to have a bit of description of the Norfolk countryside to relieve the sense of tedium. At least there's a bit of sex to do that

Well I didn't read this one this time but that review made me laugh... I usually base books on font size and number of pages I'm reading shorter ones first
