THE KITE RUNNER - Khaled Hosseini
Discuss here your thoughts on the book once you have finished reading it. Did you (not) enjoy it? Anything that struck you or maybe someone else could answer if you have a question? We're not really looking for in depth discussions... just tell us what you think of it!
For those who have finished it, please choose a star rating for the book based on how much you liked it. What did you think of it? Do you have any questions based on the book?
Well I've already read this book, last year I think... I really enjoyed it, was a very moving book. I'm sure as more people get through it I will join in the discussion, although I remember the story I can't think of any discussion points I want to raise!
Great book though, you'll all love it... well I hope you will!

Yes I second that Miss Muppet. It was a great read!
Spoiler:
How the author makes you connect with such a flawed character is amazing. It is like reading about yourself, and makes you think of all the crummy things you've done - and realise you are not the only one that is what makes us human.
I will add a link to the penguin site that gives discussion questions. I also can't really remember all of the plot, but once we start discussing it I am sure it will all come back to me!
Hope it works - contains spoilers so don't read till you have finished the book! _________________ Currently reading: The Human Stain by Philip Roth

I'm half way through this fantastic story. It's full of characters that I care about, and I am reading it as if it was an autobiography. I could be totally wrong, bit I don't much care. This has kept me interested from the very first page. Thoroughly recommend The Kite Runner and look forward to his next book. _________________ http://www.readitswapit.co.uk/UserBooks.aspx?UserID=13213

I think the reason I didn't like this book so much as others did is that I didn't connect with Amir at all.
Spoiler:
I was still mad at him at the end even after his redemption.
I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 tho because it was an eye-opener with regards to life in Afhagnistan under the Taliban. Some truely shocking stuff happened there.
Spoiler:
I didn't expect the storyline at all. There is a lot of focus after the rape on Amir's need to atone for his failure to intervene. One amazing thing for me was Hassan's resilience. Another thing I disliked about Amir was his constant need for his father's approval. As a child this is understandable but to carry it for so long into adulthood is just irritating. But I think he earns his father's respect finally when he marries Soraya.
I had already guessed that Hassan was Amir's brother. And I think by adopting Sohrab Amir acheived his resemption at last by lifting Hassan's son out of a terrible life into one where he had a better chance.
So, yes, I've rambled a lot but hey.. I had many thoughts _________________ Currently reading: Man in the Dark by Paul Auster
This just doesn't appeal to me at all, but I am thinking now that maybe I shoudl try it as it has had such good reviwes from you all. _________________ Katey

I thought the book was that good that I'm considering buying the hardback edition that came out this month as something to keep!
Me too. I thought this was a stunning read. I found that I cared about the principal characters, and enjoyed the relationships between different cultures. I am glad I did not read the acknowledgements first. This would have told me more about the author than I needed to know.
I also found it a fast paced read. Many incidents happen at just the right intervals to keep you interested. There are plenty of twists, some more obvious than others, some really (for me) unexpected events, and the book is entirely relevant to the recent and current history of Afghanistan. The one small gripe I would have is that the ending seemed rushed
Spoiler:
and convenient - I could not believe that it would be that easy to get someone into the US (just after 9/11) when they have no papers
i read this a year ago and haven't read a better one since.
i really enjoyed it, hopes he writes more and am keeping this one.
Spoiler:
the only thing i didn't like was the amount of coincidences eg. that he would know the guy in charge when he returns to Afganistan, that it's the rapist, that he uses the sling thing to injure him etc.

This one didn't get full marks from me... I think mostly because I had no idea what they were talking about half the time with the Afghan words - most were translated but some weren't so it was completely foreign to me.
Spoiler:
Still it was a good story... didn't expect Hassan to be killed off at all and hoped it would end happier than it did. Did get a bit teary at times... want to know what happened to Rahim though - people can't just run away
Agree with seanat that it was a bit too much of a coincidence that it was Assef with the Taliban but guess he was perfect for the role. Although there were a lot more coincidences.
Shall probably read Hosseini's new book when it comes out next year!
I just can't get this book at the moment, if anyone still has a copy, please take pity on me _________________ Currently reading On Beauty by Zadie Smith

Hi Mistymoo
I know what you mean - It is difficult to get books on RISI just now, probably because of Chrsitmas. I think my sister has a copy I could ask her for. What is your username on RISI? Or can you put a link to your books in your signature? I should be able to let you know this week. _________________ Currently reading: The Human Stain by Philip Roth

I haven't read this one. My daughter lent me the book months ago but I gave it back unread. If she still has it I may borrow it again but not sure if I have time to read it at the moment.
