My Mom passed this to me on Friday & I had intended it for the bottom of the TBR pile. In a quiet moment I picked it up and then I could not stop reading. It's not a 'life changer' but it's certainly a very thought provoking read. Maquire writes with an easy style and walks you by the hand through her life. Abused since the age of 6 by her Father and treated often with indifference by her mother she describes a strange childhood. You can feel the streets of 1950's Belfast under your feet, smell the wonderful cooking (yes there are 'cosy' moments in this book). I have always wondered why children do not tell when this sort of thing is happening to them - and by that I mean rape, not to put to fine a point on it. But after reading this I understand the power this man had over her, and he was quite right that everyone would blame her, this was a different time, attitudes were different, kids had nowhere to go, no one would listen if they did.
