Quote:
Arthur Golden's blockbuster bestseller, Memoirs Of A Geisha, has been brilliantly brought to the big screen by Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall. The film opens in a remote Japanese fishing village in 1929, where two sisters, Chiyo and Satsu, are sold by their troubled father to people who place Chiyo in a classy geisha house known as an okiya in Gion and Satsu in a much more vulgar and dangerous district. Chiyo becomes a maid to Hatsumomo, a cold, controlling, and calculating geisha who is instantly jealous of Chiyo's unusual, beautiful eyes and childish innocence. Chiyo is befriended by Pumpkin, another maid at the okiya, but the two are soon driven apart. Chiyo is shown compassion by the Chairman and another, more successful geisha, Mameha, who takes her under her wing as her "little sister," furthering the battle between Chiyo, now called Sayuri, and Hatsumomo. As Sayuri is trained in the art of being a geisha, learning how to walk, talk, dance, and serve (up to a point) in order to please and honor her distinguished male clients, World War II looms on the horizon, threatening to upend Japan and its old ways.

Memoirs Of A Geisha is a lush, sweeping historical and romantic Oscaar-winning epic, featuring gorgeous period costumes - primarily the exquisite kimono worn by the geisha. Featuring a fantastic cast of Ziyi Zhang (in her first English speaking role) Michelle Yeoh, Ken Watanabe and Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa with an enchanting score from John Williams.

Winner of 3 Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

2. The Da Vinci Code
Certificate 12 years and over; Year 2006; Duration 2 hours and 22 minutes (approx)

Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou & Ian McKellen

Quote:
Uncover The Secret.

Dan Brown's international bestseller comes alive in the film The Da Vinci Code, directed by Ron Howard with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman.

Join symbologist Robert Langdon (Academy Award® Winner Tom Hanks) and cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou) in their heart-racing quest to solve a bizarre murder mystery that will take them from France to England; and behind the veil of a mysterious ancient society, where they discover a secret protected since the time of Christ.

With first-rate performances by Sir Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina and Jean Reno, The Da Vinci Code is an involving and intriguing thriller of the highest order.

3. Sleepers
Certificate 18 years and over; Year 1996; Duration 2 hours and 28 minutes (approx)

Brad Pitt ; Brad Renfro ; Bruno Kirby ; Dustin Hoffman ; Kevin Bacon ; Minnie Driver ; Robert De Niro ; Jason Patric ; Billy Crudup ; Vittorio Gassman ; Terry Kinney ; Ron Eldard

Quote:
To four boys growing up on the streets in the mid 1960s, Hell's Kitchen was a place of innocence ruled by corruption. The infamous New York City neighbourhood that stretched north from 34th to 56th Street and pushed west from the 8th Avenue to the Hudson River was guided by both priest and gangsters. The children who grew up there shared joyful times, but subscribed to a sacred social code-crimes against the neighbourhood were not permitted, and when they did occur, punishment was severe.

Four friends made a mistake that changed their lives forever...

4. Little Women
Certificate Universal Suitable for All; Year 1994; Duration 1 hour and 54 minutes (approx)

Winona Ryder, Gabriel Byrne & Susan Sarandon

Quote:
A classic coming-of-age story set during the Civil War, Little Women follows the childhood adventures of the four free-spirited March sisters: beautiful Meg (Trini Alvarado), fragile Beth (Claire Danes), romantic Amy (Kirsten Dunst & Samantha Mathis), and impetuous Jo (Winona Ryder) who is determined to defy social conventions by seeking her fame and fortune as a writer. All four sisters are en compassed by the love of their caring Marimba (Susan Sarandon). This enduring story unwraps a gift of humour and heartfelt emotions as it follows the sisters' turbulent romances and their lasting friendships in the enchanting years between girlhood and womanhood. 'Little Women' is a film to be enjoyed and cherished by the whole family.

5. One flew over the Cuckoo's nest
Certificate 18 years and over; Year 1975; Duration 2 hours and 8 minutes (approx)

Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher & William Redfield

Quote:
A nice rest in a state mental hospital beats a stretch in the pen, right? Randle P. McMurphy (Nicholson), a free-spirited con with lightning in his veins and glib on his tongue, fakes insanity and moves in with what he calls the "nuts". Immediately, his contagious sense of disorder runs up against numbing routine. No way should guys pickled on sedatives shuffled around in bathrobes when the World Series is on. This means war! On one side is McMurphy. On the other is soft-spoken Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), among the most coldly monstrous villains in film history. At stake is the fate of every patient on the ward...

Have voted for Memoirs of a Geisha. Mainly because some of us will have just read it therefore it will be fresh in our minds. I have seen it before but am interested to see it again now that I've nearly finished the book.

I voted for Memoirs of a Geisha too as reading it at the moment and would love to see the film. I think if it doesn't win, we should have it as a second film choice. We ought to do that every month, don't you think? Providing there is a film version of each month's book choices.

I've recently watch Memoirs and the Da Vinci Code so I went for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest as I have been thinking of reading the book. Won't say what I thought of them in case one is chosen.

Yes, Glynis ... I think that would be a good plan. I love watching the film soon after I've read the book (did this with Girl with a pearl too). Especially as there will sometimes be books that haven't been made into a film, I think this would be do-able each month x

Whichever film is chosen, Blueflower, don't forget to post your thoughts on it.

Thanks Mazzy. it's do-able too.

Memoirs of a Geisha is on Sky Movies Drama on Sat 30th June @ 8pm

When is Perfume on Gwen? According to the Sky website it's showing on 4th July? Didn't you say it's on this week? Not that it matters being on July 4th

We couldn't afford the movie and sport channels anymore (plus we don't really have time to watch them!) but I have seen memoirs. I bought it for a friend for Xmas so will borrow it from her just to refresh my memory.

We don't usually have the sky movies but we have them at the moment on an offer of a £1 per month for 3 months. Perfume isn't on movies yet but can be 'bought' on box office for £3.95. It use to be cheaper but I haven't bought one for a long time but think I might give into temptation this time.
