I read this a couple of years ago and it made my favourite books list (not easy - you all know how fussy I am   ). Unfortunately I didn't have a book journal then so I've got nothing written down but I remember the sense of tentative moves towards freedom and self-fulfilment as the novel progressed. I really identified with Mattie and I guess that's why I liked it so much.

I liked it but read it 2 months ago and had already forgotten what the plot was, had to go back to the book to remember. Still gave it 4*, hesitated between 3 and 4

I read this just before Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characterisation...loved Mattie ...
Strange, that the book had sat upon my tbr shelf for about twelve months before I picked it up to read, and then found that I wished I read it earlier....
Put it onto RiSi and it was snapped up within minutes of it being listed ,so I guess it is still a popular book.

I was the same Josie! I had it for ages and when I finally got around to reading it, I was really annoyed with myself for not picking it up earlier - I felt the same about Memoirs of a Geisha. It is so hard to know what will be a great read isn't it?

I read it ages ago when it was a book club choice, and thoroughly enjoyed it: reminded me of Joshilyn Jackson and Sue Miller a bit!

I read this ages ago, and remember being very impressed with it. Like the rest of you-very interested in  the character of Mattie, and became really quite involved in the storyline. Having said that, the plot was quite predictable, but no less enjoyable for that.

I have to say I didn't really enjoy this book!  I bought it about 18 months ago and tried to get into it but the slow, ponderous pace bored me.  It is well written, but I had expected it to be something more.

I have read Jennifer Donnelly's The Tea Rose and The Winter Rose and thoroughly enjoyed them.  I got Tea Rose from my library because it was such a huge, doorstep of a book and I was looking for escapism and fun.  The beginning of Tea Rose looked as though it was going to be a disappointment, it being slow to warm up but I'm glad I persevered because the rest of the book was a joy.

I only plodded through Gathering Light in the hope that this too was just a slow start, but I have to say I gave up 3/4 of the way through because it was depressing me

I eagerly await anything by JD which features the heroine from the Rose series books.

Well I have to say that I thought this book was AMAZING!!! I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down and found myself completely captivated by the storyline and characters - especially Mattie.

For me this book combines my interests - the period it's set in (1906), emancipation of women, history etc. I also loved the style of writing, fiction combined with the true story of Gace Brown's murder.

Spoiler:

I thought scene of the birth of Minnie's twins was well written, so graphic! It made me forever grateful that I have given birth at the turn of this century and not the last.

I was really pleased about the hopeful ending as well. I thought Mattie probably would end up going to New York but for a while in the middle of the book you thought perhaps she would stay, marry Royal Loomis and have the same life that her mother had. It was great that Grace's death wasn't completely in vain as it freed Mattie of her domestic burdens and allowed her to see that she should step out into the world as an individual and take up her place at college. It was people like Mattie that paved the way for the rights that us women have now. It makes me look at my own life and wonder if that was me 100 years ago, would I have had enough courage in my own convictions to leave behind everything I've ever known to go to college and have a freer life?

I also liked the character of Emily Baxter / Wilcox. She really allowed Mattie an insight into a different world, but she also shows what women were up against. How her poetry was considered immoral and the fact that her estranged husband wanted her institutionalized. It's hard to imagine a world where you don't have the same freedom of speech that we do now.

All in all, I found this a compelling and engrossing read.

Agree Heather-I too wondered about the eventual outcome, which is one sign of a good book for me. I'll certainly try some of her other works (at some stage), as I've also heard good reports on those too.

I really enjoyed this book and gave it 5 stars.

Spoiler:

I found the book really easy to read and kept wanting to go back to it every time I put it down.  That's why it took me less than a day to read.  After reading the blurb on the back I thought it would be more about the murder, the reason I chose to read it, and initially I wished it would go back to that.  Once I got more into the story of Matt before she started at the Glenmore and her family the less the murder part mattered to me.  I think the book showed how hard it was for women to break away from the traditional family life at that time and indeed how hard that life was.  Apart from her father who was tied to the farm it was relatively easy for the other male members of her family(brother and uncle) to go off and do their own thing.  Whereas she was stuck at home looking after the younger kids and was exactly in the same role her mother had been in.  The ending could have gone either way and it ended as I hoped.  Although it seemed a bit far fetched that she was able to earn enough in one summer to pay off the back taxes etc. and still have enough for her own travel costs.

All in all this has been my favourite read of BB so far.

I didn't like it.

Spoiler:

The murder of Grace was totally pointless really, I think Emily had more of an influence on Mattie realising that she could have a better life.  If you're going to write a book about a real life murder you should at least stick to the facts of the case!  How on earth would Grace have the letters she sent?  Surely the boyfriend would have them?

I enjoyed the other storyline more, the growing up and maturing of Mattie, although it reminded me far too much of Anne of Green Gables, she'd even stolen scenes from it like the cows escaping.  Although as a storyline it was far too predictable - I always knew that she'd end up going to New York because no woman writer nowadays would ever write a story about a girl giving up her dreams for drudgery and marriage.

Sorry if that's harsh and offends anyone!

I really enjoyed this book and agree with a lot of Heather's spoiler. I also agree with Amie's Anne of Green Gables comment, which is part of the reason I actually enjoyed the book. 4 stars from me.
