For those who have read the book, please choose a star rating based on how much you liked it.
I read this one back in January 2008. I wasnt overly impressed if I remember rightly, although I know lots of people really enjoyed it.
I'll look forward to seeing what you all think _________________ Currently reading: The Tent The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy and Granny The Pag by Nina Bawden

I read it last year sometime, I thought it was OK, but not as brilliant as a lot of people seemed to think. It was a nice quick read though. _________________ Kill the tbr - currently 124

I have borrowed this book from the library twice in the past and still not read it to date! I'm hoping to get myself back to the library next week and see if I can pick myself up a copy. _________________ Currently Reading:

I thought this was a lovely book and a nice quick read.
Spoiler:
Matilda tells the story of her life on the (presumably fairly isolated) island during a time of conflict and of her eventual 'escape' and future life in the wider world. Great expectations is used as a means of escape throughout the book and is a kind of parallel to Matilda's own life.
The death of Matilda's mother and Mr Watts, the two main figures in her life, are both shocking and unexpected.
As this story unfolded I was absolutely engrossed. I would definately recommend this one. _________________ Currently reading: Man in the Dark by Paul Auster

I read this last year sometime and really liked it. I liked the connection with Great Expectations and I liked the main characters. I found some of it very moving.
Spoiler:
I found the deaths of her mother and Mr Watts quite disturbing and unexpected which makes me refrain from calling it a 'nice' book but I also found it uplifting at the end

I agree - I am glad I stuck this one out. I finished this this morning and really enjoyed it.
Spoiler:
Some of the events towards the end really did upset me too. I cant imagine how Matilda coped with these events - she seems to have blocked them out and does admit she went into a bit a a depression after she left the island. I would of liked to have known more about Maltida's life off the island. Felt the end was a bit rushed. Still a good read.

I also read Mr Pip a year ago and was half and half about it, if that makes sense.
Spoiler:
I liked the connection to Great Expectations and I agree the death of her mother and the teacher is disturbing and unexpected. I wasn't overly keen on the ending, but liked the fact the trolley and red nose is explained!
I rate it 3 out of 5 stars. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I read this a while ago now but I can remember the key moments some uplifting, some tragic.
I really think this is a worthwhile read and though there are connections to Great Expectations, I don't think you need to have read it to understand the plot of Mister Pip. _________________ Reading: The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho

I enjoyed this one, and it was a quick read for me too. At one point in the middle I thought it was getting a bit slow and wondered where the story was going. And then...
Spoiler:
I was completely shocked about the brutal death of Mr Watts, although when he has called himself Mr Pip to the Rebels for his story telling I did wonder if that would come back to haunt him. However the rape and murder of Matilda's mother had me in tears and I hadn't expected that at all.
I gave it 4 stars overall and was glad to have finally read it! _________________ Currently Reading:
