For those who have read the book, please choose a star rating based on how much you liked it.

If you do have something to post that may ruin the plot for others, please remember to use the spoiler function (Details: http://risibookclub.myfreeforum.org/ftopic12.php )

I read this a few months ago and really loved it.  I loved the idea of narrative by death and it dealt with the holocaust really well.

I also read this book a few months ago. I did enjoy it but perhaps not as much as I'd expected. I agree that it dealt with the holocaust really well and had lovely period detail of WW2. I also found myself crying through the last 50 pages or so. However...

Spoiler:

I didn't like the narration by Death. I found his manner too matter of fact and I didn't like getting told what was going to happen up front. For me that aspect of the narration ruined the book.

I still gave it 4 stars, as it's one of those books that I still find myself thinking about months later.

I also read this a few months ago. I enjoyed it alot. However I too expected it to be better. Maybe because I had heard so much about it.
Spoiler:

I liked the fact it was narrated by death & also that we saw the war through the eyes of ordinary German people who weren't supporters of Hitler. This was certainly a different perspective from other WW2 novels.

Gave this 4 stars as I really enjoyed reading about the war from such a different perspective and will thinking about the story for a while

Read this in the summer and really enjoyed it, found it very moving. I loved Max's book - so sad. The characterisation is excellent and I loved Death as the narrator. I gave it 4/5 stars.

I started reading this one a few months back but was distracted by another book and so only read a few pages

Will definitely give it another go though as you all seem to really enjoy it!

I finished this at the weekend.

Spoiler:

It was a great book and I loved the way the tale unfolded. But I think I suffered by expecting too much and have put 3 stars (the lowest it's had from anyone, eek!) mainly because I sometimes felt death as the narrator became irrelevant, it was just the story being told and then suddenly the narrative would change to I as if to remind you it was death talking. Also, it didn't move me in the same way as other similar books. But having said that, I did enjoy it and did dither over giving it 4 stars, but I'm generally a fan of straight stories, the death narrator thing didn't do it for me!

Just finished this! I really enjoyed it and though it was very moving and thought provoking particularly the portrayal of the jews and their march to Dachau.

I didn't give it 5 stars though because i did find the narrative by death  odd at the beginning and the tendency to pre-empt what was actually going to happen put me off a little bit. So i gave it 4 stars cos i did enjoy it!!

3 stars from me too. I just finished reading before work this morning. I did enjoy it but I don't think it really lived up to all the hype. Was this one of those kid/adult crossover books? I really have issues with them...

Spoiler:

I thought Death was a good narrator and some of his comments were quite profound. It doesn't matter how many books I read about the holocaust - the devastation that was carried out during the second world war still horrifies me and even though this story is essentially about a child's experiences, and told in a way that seems sometimes to be aimed at younger readers, the horror of it all was still coming through. A few people I know have said that it deals with the holocaust in a very sensitive and subtle way but I disagree. I think its all laid bare for you to see, there's no sugar coating to lessen the impact, which is as it should be.

I really enjoyed this book (a keeper) which I read in 2008.  I 'keep' so few books nowadays that this one must have stayed with me.

I gave this 4 stars.  I read this last year and really enjoyed it and it is a keeper  for me.  I have to say I agree with what you have in your spoiler nicnic.

My son bought this book and it has taken a little while for him to remember to bring it home from school so that I could read it.

I really enjoyed it and have given it 4 stars. Most of all, now that I have read it, I am looking forward to talking about it with my son.

I can't decide if I like Death as the narrator or not. Usually I am not keen on this style of story telling and there were times it got on my nerves and then times I found myself quite liking it.  I did like Deaths little statements of facts given in bold throughout the book though.

Got this from the library yesterday, and it is a whopper !
But the print is double-spaced... what is the point when it just makes the book cumbersome ?

Nah, it was like a Hardback format with a paperback cover.  Whopping 586 pages

I gave this 3*
Towards the end I started to feel that it was emotionally manipulative, going for maximum tear-jerking effect.  I HATED the foreshadowing of
Spoiler:

Rudy's death - although I am not sure that foreshadowing is the correct term, as it is not just hinted at, but explicitly stated?

I found you could tell it was a children's /"crossover" book -
Spoiler:

e.g. when Max is among one of the parades of Jews thru Molching was just too far-fetched for me.  I also disliked the section where Rudy gives a teddy bear to the dying crashed pilot- what did this add to the book ?

Guess I am just a stony-hearted Grinch
