For those who have finished Perfume, please choose a star rating for the film based on how much you liked it.
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with no smell, develops a superior olfactory sense, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he searches for the ultimate scent.

Hmmm....not sure if I fancy this one or not. If I go to the video shop I may get it out but otherwise I may give the film a miss this month. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I can't wait to watch this. I missed a trip to the cinema with the book group when it came out (we'd just read the book).
I might have to hire this from the videoshop too. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I'm going to look out for this in the video shop. I've got the book on my TBR pile so won't be able to compare the 2 just yet, but I'd like to see this.

I haven't either but it is on SKy box office later in the week so I will 'buy' it from there.
Aha! I asked Tim if he'd seen it on Sky as it should be on around about now, so you've answered it for me. Thanks Gwen _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Have some posts gone missing on this forum. I'm sure the last three or four have gone!
Anyway, I watched Perfume last night after getting it from Sky box office. The film was very true to the book and the imagery was really brought the book to life. But I think if I had seen the film first I would have enjoyed it but would probably not have been inspired to buy this book. So I am glad that I had read the book first as it has a lot more depth and character development and was much more detailed. Mr BF enjoyed the film particularly the scene in the square - typical. Those of you that have watched the film or read the book will know what I am talking about.

Just watched Perfume. It took me ages to get around to watching it and I feel a bit bad that I have only watched one of the films so far when I was so keen to start the film side of things i am just going to spoiler all my thoughts.
Spoiler:
I really enjoyed the film, once it got going. I thought the part before Grasse was a bit slow. For some reason I thought it was a lot more gruesome than the book. During the book I didn't really see the murders as terrible (weird or what), but it really brought it home seeing them on the screen. Also watching it on screen made the story seem a lot stranger than I remember it was when I was reading it. When I read it a scent that made the whole world fall in love with you seemed so plausible, but I don't know if it was as believable on film. I think if I hadn't read the book I wouldn't have been too sure what was going on at some points. Overall I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't want to watch it again, and I am glad I read the book first. I think the book was a lot better. Is it just me or did anyone feel sympathy with Jean-Baptist when they were reading the book? I kinda did, but the film put me off him (surprisingly )
That is a bit of a rambling mess, but that is the way my mind feels just now I can't believe Memoirs is not on Virgin Pay per view. I will def go down to the video shop and get it soon though, prob next week. _________________ Currently reading: The Human Stain by Philip Roth

First of all I saw the movie before reading the book and I had no trouble understanding what it was all about. I have to say that I didn't expect to like the movie, being "the story of a murderer" and all, however its atmosphere was captivating. The colors were so... I don't know, contrasting, the dark of the streets and the red of the girls' hair. The voice of the narrator helped a lot with getting "in the mood" too. What can I say, if you liked the book you're probably going to like the movie too as it it quite faithful to the written version.
Spoiler:
Someone said earlier that only when seeing the movie the criminal side of Grenouille struck home. I think that is because in the book that part wasn't very detailed. They found a girl, and another, and another and that wa about it, no detailed description of the bodies. Whereas in the movie one could actually see the victims, the director insisted a bit more on them.
One difference I noticed between the movie and the book is the fact that in the book Grenouille killed any extremely beautiful girl; in the movie he only killed redheads.

Spoiler:
Yay I finally watched it!
Gorgeous cinematography; I was expecting it to be really gory and was surprised at how sensitively Grenouille and the murders were portrayed. I was also expecting Grenouille to be much uglier! I probably wouldn't have felt as sorry for him had he have been. I was expecting someone as repulsive as the boss at the tannery - he was gross
Loved the opening scenes and thought they captured baby Grenouille perfectly. Never before have I seen a baby look so helpless.
the whole concept worked well on film. Ben Whishaw did a brilliant job of portraying someone with an incredible sense of smell. He looked in pain when he first encountered the perfect scent.
I think the film does a brilliant if not better job of making you understand why he needs to capture the perfect scent, than the book I suppose because you can see facial expressions. The only thing being the book really gets across how feral this need is. I felt sorry for him in the film, whereas he's much creepier in the book, more predatory.
