|
I thought I'd take a leaf from Glynis's book and start up a reading diary on here for both Laurence and Kiran. Because their reading material is totally different, I'm going to set up two threads. That way the books are separated by age.
Laurence has always loved reading, two books we have borrowed from the library this week and read are:
Platypus by Chris Riddle
Platypus decides it's the perfect day to go collecting. He finds a big rock, an old shoe and a broken umbrella, but none of these are quite what he's looking for. Then he finds a curly shell - just right! But it keeps going missing from his special box. The 'thief' turns out to be a little hermit crab living inside the shell so Platypus takes it back to the sea where it belongs. Luckily there are plenty of unoccupied shells for Platypus to collect - and keep.
We've loved reading this. Laurence loves reciting what Platypus has collected. He looks at all the pictures and has to name everything he can see as we read each page.
Mo's Smelly Jumper by David Bedford
Mo Monkey loves his rainbow jumper. He wears it all the time - he even cleans his face and feet with it. Soon Mo's jumper starts to smell and pong and whiff. Mother Monkey is determined to give it a good wash - but Mo has other ideas.
This is a good fun story and Laurence has picked up some new words from reading this. He's been saying his socks "pong" at the end of the day!
I'll keep adding to this as and when I can.

This is great. Haven't heard of either of those books and will look out for them. I just know Charis would love the latter one. Anything to do with animals and stinky smells she loves _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Laurence and I read lots of books but unfortunately I don't get a chance to add all of them to this thread. However here are 4 books that we are currently enjoying from the library:
By the author of "The Bear under the Stairs" and "Little Monster Did It!". This is a story about a little boy who won't go to bed. At first it's fun staying up, but gradually the drowsy world nods off all around him, and the baby finds himself alone. But there is someone who is not asleep.
The illustrations in this book are lovely and Laurence likes looking over them and discovering new things on each page. A lovely bedtime story too.
The popular "How Do Dinosaurs..." series continues with a hilarious look at dinosaurs at dinner time! When dinosaurs eat their food, what do they do? This book runs through the gamut of mealtime bad behaviour, satisfyingly concluding with impeccably behaved dinosaur dinner guests: 'Eat up. Eat up, little dinosaur.' A sure-fire winner with parents of young children - it will be an invaluable help with meal time manners.
This is great for looking at table manners and trying new foods in a very basic / child friendly way.
Lola is a loopy, lively, lovable dog. D-O-G. Dog. We know that, but Lola has other ideas. She thinks she is anything but a dog. Lola thinks she is a proud lion, a mountain goat - even a wild wolf! And really Lola is more than a dog - she's a best friend, too. Lindsey Gardiner is a rising star in the children's book world, best known for her lovable characters Poppy and Max. Her previous picture book for OUP, "If You're Happy and You Know It", has become an instant bestseller, selling over 70,000 copies worldwide in its first six months.
My parents regularly look after their friends dog, which is small, black and white and called Lola just like in this book! So it was pure luck to find this and a lovely comic tale too.
One tiny snail longs to see the world and hitches a lift on the tail of a whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, past icebergs and volcanoes, sharks and penguins, and the little snail feels so small in the vastness of the world. But when disaster strikes and the whale is beached in a bay, it's the tiny snail who saves the day
A great story from the authors of The Gruffalo etc. Laurence loves it. _________________ Currently Reading:

We have three of these Heather, all except the 3rd one and they are firm favourites of Eva's. _________________ Currently reading - The Italian Boy - Murder and Grave Robbery in 1830s London - Sarah Wise |

| Just reading bedtime stories to my kids makes me feel drowsy - whatever it is! I don't know this one but some of the ones written about bedtime are lovely! |

These are the latest additions from Laurence:
A rhyming story about a clever little mouse and a monster. When mouse goes for a walk in a dangerous forest, he invents tales of a fantastic creature called a Gruffalo to scare off his enemies. Imagine his surprise when he meets a real Gruffalo!
I know this is a really popular book with pre-schoolers but I had to add it on here. Laurence is going through a phase of reading this one every day, several times a day. He's memorised it word for word and now reads it to me!!
Cassie doesn't want to go to bed - she can hear a 'thing' breathing underneath it So Grandpa gives her a kiss soldier to guard over her all night. Once the lights are out, the kiss soldier comes to life But will he be able to help Cassie to overcome her fear? And what is it that's under her bed? This delightful story deals with a common childhood fear in a reassuring, warm way. Its beautiful, lyrical text and cosy pictures will help all children to get a sound night's sleep
This is absolutely lovely, and definitely makes us all feel so drowsy as we get to the end of it. A perfect bedtime story.
This one is actually on a similar theme to Cassie and the Kiss Soldier, in that there is something underneath the little boy's bed. It has a rhyming story, which is lovely and a nice ending. Another great one for bedtime.
Move over George Clooney and 'ER' - Doctor Miaow and Ambulance Driver Woof of Kiss-it-Better Hospital will take care of things now... There's an emergency phone-call at Kiss-it-Better Hospital. It's Tom Cat ...he's hurt his leg! Can Doctor Miaow and Ambulance Driver Woof please come to help him straightaway? Of course they can! Doctor Miaow and Ambulance Driver Woof are always there to help others and save the day, and children are invited to follow the gentle drama of the exciting yet caring world of "Kiss-it-Better Hospital".
This is a great story. A nice hospital / ambulance story, lovely characters and good bold / bright illustrations. Laurence loves playing at doctors anyway, so a great book for him to enjoy. _________________ Currently Reading:

I loved The Gruffalo Heather. Worth mentionning just in case it has escaped anyone's notice.
Don't know the other 3 but getting a bit out of touch with picture books now mine have moved on.
