Lord of the Flies and The handmaid's tale are must reads treez. You will definitely love Lord of the Flies it is quite dark and creepy. I enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale too it's like 1984 from a female perspective - also quite frightening. The only other one I have read on your list is The Alchemist I wasn't too keen on it, but it was ages ago I read it - my sister gave it to me to help me decide about my future! LOL

I'd like to read The Handmaid's Tale too. I read The Alchemist a couple of years ago and I could relate to it - I see lots of those 'signs', apparently sent by the Universe, and they've all been significant to me.

Bumped as I would appreciate some input on where to go next! Of course there is the small matter of The Winter Queen (awaiting me at the library) and Beauty which are both TBR soon for reading groups. I must seek out my copy of The Colour Purple from years ago - around the time the film came out - whenever that was??

If you have time please comment on any of the TBR pile. Negatives AND positives!

Not read many

The Alchemist I loved (bought about 4 more of his books but not had the chance to read them yet)... keeping The Alchemist though - one of the few I want to re-read.

Goodnight Mr Tom was a great book (and love the film) although I think I was in about Primary 6 when I read it (aged 10/11?).

A lot of other authors I know on your list and like/heard they're good but not read any.

LT

You should definitely read The Handmaid's Tale next!!! The only other one I could comment on would be The Lady and The Unicorn; I didn't enjoy this at all and gave up about 40 or so pages in. Hope this helps!

The Constant Princess is good, but then all her books are good... I read Driving Over Lemons on my way back from France and it was very good, will probably read the next one after Fingersmith unless anything more tempting comes my way first!

Looked through your list and picked out the ones I have read and put in order. The one I liked best first. I haven’t read Lord of the Flies for years but think I liked it. I wasn’t keen on Driving over Lemons. I think this was the book I had to give up on because of the description of pig killing. Despite been a farmers daughter I prefer not to read about the mechanics of meat production.

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho
The American Boy - Andrew Taylor
Narrow Dog To Carcassonne - Terry Darlington
Lord of the Flies - William Golding
The Highest Tide - Jim Lynch
First to Die - James Patterson
Driving over Lemons - Chris Stewart

I have got quote a few of the other books on your list but haven’t read them but would like to read the Sarah Rayne and The Crimson Petal and the White but it may be sometime before I get around to them.

i have recently read 'the constant princess' - i enjoyed it, even though it left things out i wanted to be in. it's a totally different way of looking at catherine and henry.

miss garnet's angel is wonderful. i cannot recomend this highly enough.

lord of the flies i studied in school, and it's a great story but i havent looked at it in 20yrs.

a dark dividing is brilliant - very dark, and keeps you guessing.

at swim two boys. good, and if you dont know your irish history well it is really educational as well as being a great story.

Thank you for your thoughts, Grockle - it's good to have some feedback and it can help us make a decision on what to read next. Do you have much on your TBR Pile?

Read I Capture the Castle-I loved it, although I found it quite slow going in places. I'd also like Goodnight Mr Tom-need to add it to my wanted list!
