I love Wuthering Heights. The first time I read it I was about 12 and I hated it I had no idea what was going on and who was who but I read it again when I was older and I loved it.
It's so different from anything I've ever read before. Everyone reduces it to a simple love story between Heathcliff and Cathy but I always thought that was a rather weak assessment of a very powerful novel. To be honest I don't really like any of the characters much (Heathcliff is a psychopath, Cathy is too passionate and too selfish to be truly likable) but the emotions are so raw that it's impossible (I think) not to be moved by it (in some way).
It's much more about jealousy and revenge than it is about love and the love which is portrayed is not love I can even comprehend but it's also impossible to ignore. Some of the images have stayed with me
Spoiler:
the hand tapping at the window calling to be let in
etc.
The first time you read it I think it's a bit complicated because everyone is called the same thing and it's tad confusing but it's worth getting to grips with who everyone is and how they're related etc.
Anyway I love it it's brilliant! I'm trying to encourage my bf to read it because I think it's something men can like too. Ok I've talked enough and I'm not sure it all made sense! lol

Charlotte, you hit the nail on the head. I bought a postcard from our Haworth trip last year which reads:
"My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath. A source of visible delight - but necessary."
For me, that quote sums up Cathy and Heathcliff's bond. Not necessarily a pleasant bond but one which neither can sever. They can't help but be attracted to one another. A love/hate relationship perhaps.
I love the rawness of the novel too. Like you I read it a few years ago and couldn't make head nor tail of it, but read it again 2 years ago and loved every page. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I only gave this 3 stars as it just didn't seem to live up to the hype for me. Everyone I know has raved about this so maybe I was expecting too much. I did enjoy it and thought the story was good, it just felt dragged out in places. Maybe it will improve with a second read when I know who everyone is and there isn't that confusion with trying to keep up with the family tree.
