What an epic film. Unfortunately I had to stop it a few times to see to the little one (and to answer her Qs about the fire, Bonnie's horse and the wounded soldiers). Started it at 4pm and it finished at 7.45pm. It seemed to go on forever. I'd seen the classic snippets of the film (Scarlet with Rhett) but didn't realise
Spoiler:

Scarlet was in love with Ashley throughout the film, not Rhett. I didn't know it wasn't until the end of the film that she realised she did want to be with Rhett, by which time it was too late. The ending really is magnificent. Some of the shots were lovely - I especially liked the one at the beginning - the silhouette of Scarlet and her father framed by the huge tree. Here it is:

You got a feeling of deep uprest just by looking at the dramatic skies in most of the scenes.

I got the impression that Rhett could be abusive towards Scarlet in his need to dominate her (I'm thinking of the stairs scene). I liked Scarlet's character - so fiery and strong, she often assumes masculine roles in the film & takes control of the action. She doesn't fit the stereotypical myth of how a woman should be and act.

Leslie Howard as Ashley seemed too old, but he played the part extremely well.

Would like to watch the film again. I can see why it's a classic. I read online that some of the scenes from the book were played down in the film - scenes between Rhett and Scarlet, and Rhett and Belle Watling. I haven't read the book, but wouldn't it have been good if these great actors could've been more daring in their roles? (Would like to see a remake of the film - with actors playing the roles as if they're in a film and not in a musical! Some of the acting seemed too choreographed & melodramatic, but the style is typical of its day).

The very first time I saw this movie was almost 20 years ago - I was too young to understand more than half of it

About one year ago I got the book and started reading it, without too many expectations. It was (still is) one of the most interesting and captivating books I've ever read - not only because of the love story between Rhett and Scarlett but also because of the way the author described the changes in their society after the war - definitely a must read.

As you can imagine reading (and being so fond of) the book opened me the appetite for the movie, couldn't wait to (re)see it and so on.
Um. I've never been more disappointed by a "book-turned-to-movie" in my entire life. I do understand how it's a huge book and they couldn't keep all the details because the movie would have been way too long and all - but I felt like they were "cosmeticing" ( <-- newly invented word) the story, and thus lost it a lost of depth.

Oh well. That's only my opinion and a lot of people absolutely love the movie. I'd be curious to know if anyone who read the book feels like me or otherwise

I would like to read the book now to compare. I imagine it to be like the film, but from what you say Kay it doesn't sound like it is.
