Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult
Discuss here your thoughts on the book once you have finished reading it. Did you (not) enjoy it? Anything that struck you or maybe someone else could answer if you have a question? We're not really looking for in depth discussions... just tell us what you think of it!
For those who have finished it, please choose a star rating for the book based on how much you liked it. What did you think of it? Do you have any questions based on the book?
i loved this book i have to say i was really gripped and it was something quite different, i really didnt know what to think and it had lots of twists and turned. i loved every minute of it, this is one of my favourite books of hers, i found the characters very believable and u really started to fear for both the mother and the childs sanity
Going to start this tonight! I'm really looking forward to it as I've been wanting to read it for a while. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I enjoyed this book, although it isn't one of my favourite of Jodie Picoults. I did like Faith though, something about her was very endearing and I felt like I wanted to guide and nurture her! I may well come back and add more detail after about the actual plot (which I felt was stretched at points). _________________ Katey

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me, I'm quite new to this too but I really enjoy BB!
I think you'll enjoy Keeping Faith Tina, I'm loving it so far. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

There's no set time... this thread and the others will be moved to the different sections under 'Previous Book Discussions' at the end of the month when we start the new books so you can join in anytime. Just click on the book name and add your thoughts.
So no pressure to read if you don't have the time or just want to read 1 and the other later on.

I've read this one before so although I'm new here I'm quite pleased I can jump in and talk about it! This is probably my favourite JP book. I enjoyed the subject matter because I'm interested in religious issues even though I'm not religious. I find most of her books quite gripping although I find she's a bit weak on characterisation (I mean they don't seem that well formed to me) but I think it's the subject which carries her books because they're always controversial or topical. I always think she's like John Grisham for girls!
So yes I enjoyed this one a lot.
I'm so sorry but this is going to have to be brief as I'm ill at the moment and am not really supposed to be on the computer!
I really enjoyed this book but like Keeley, I didn't enjoy it as much as some of her others (don't think it's got anything to do with the religious side of the book though?)
What I did like about this book was that it covered two contoversial subjects...religion and Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. I will have to add more comments when I'm better I'm afraid but for this one I gave it 4 stars. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I enjoyed this book but not as much as some of her others. I agree the characters are a bit weak & could have been filled out a bit better especially the father.
Spoiler:
My main disappointment with this book is that I expected it be more about Faith & her miracles & the church trying to prove her right or wrong!! Suddenly half way through the book it changed & was about a custody battle for Faith which I didn't expect & I was disappointed by this. The Munchausen by proxy angle was good & did have me wondering a few times about her mother. The relationship between her mother & Ian Fletcher was a bit too predictable. I loved the ending with Faith talking to herself in the bedroom. That was an excellent twist !! & really made me think!
I actually got a bit confused at the very end and would just like to clarify something.....
Spoiler:
When Faith was talking to herself at the very end, I read into it that she had just been "talking to God" to get Mariahs' attention, is that how everyone else read it? Because she only did it when Mariah was listening/watching her.
If that's the case though, was it Faith that made herself ill somehow and what about the stigmata?

Hi Mel,
Spoiler:
that's how I interpreted it as well. I think it's an excellent twist. I think she really did see God all along as the miracles etc... were real. However she looked for God under her bed & couldn't find him/her. I think that now her mother is happy & she is with her God has gone????
but to keep her mother happy she pretends he/she is still there!! Does this make sense?
I really loved the idea of God being female & would have been out there with those women promoting God as a female & really pi**ing the church off!!

Just finished tonight, found it a bit of a struggle in the end ... gave it 3 stars.
Spoiler:
Well after my Veronika disaster, I at least managed to finish this one. I sympathised with the characters ... especially Faith and Mariah. I was suspicious of Ian but also wanted him and Mariah to make a go of things. One thing I am noticing with Jodi Picoult is her very marked style of ending paragraphs with little cliff hangers. I hope people know what I mean by this. Ending *sometimes too many I feel* paragraphs with some telling moment/phrase/surprise. I found it a little tiresome at times. This is the second Picoult I've read ... I am wondering whether the themes of children, medical problems, hospitals, court cases and motherhood run throughout a lot of her books or whether it's just been the two I've read.
I nearly threw up when Ian said that maybe Mariah was her religion, but it was nearing time for Big Brother to start so maybe I was getting fidgety.
What else ... ermmmmm, I kept thinking there was going to be some classic twists (as in My Sisters Keeper) and felt a little let down by the end of the book that there weren't. I wasn't surprised at the shady outcome of it all ... in fact I wasn't even clear what the last page of it was saying. That Faith made it all up for attention? How did she bring her Grandmother back to life then? And the Stigmata? It was all a bit too bizarre for my liking.
This has all gone negative again. I did like this book, despite my moans. And I will be reading another of her books I have on TBR. I just won't be desperate for it
