May's film choice: To Kill a Mockingbird
Discuss here your thoughts on To Kill a Mockingbird once you have watched it. Did you (not) enjoy it? Anything that struck you or maybe someone else could help if you have a question? We're not really looking for in depth discussions... just tell us what you think of it!
For those who have finished it, please choose a star rating for the film based on how much you liked it.
Loved it, one of my favourite films ever! Will watch it again probably next week and add some thoughts. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I was very surprised by this film, because it did have quite a lot in common with the book. Gregory Peck was Atticus, perfect casting, and the children were really good and I thought the bit in the woods was very well handled. I'm not usually a fan of films of books but this was an exception. I don't think it was a substitute for reading the book as the book is much more in depth and has other story lines.

Awww just finished watching this film. It was wonderful and moving
Spoiler:
I loved Gregory Peck's portrayal of Atticus, and was on the edge of my seat watching his speech in the courtroom. I can understand that he won an Oscar for that.
I also thought the actor who played Tom Robinson was excellent too, I was in floods watching him in court, he played the part with conviction.
I loved Heck Tate's speech at the end of the film
It was well cast and the setting was exactly how I imagined it. It's faithful to the book, although quite a few scenes from the book are omitted, and there's obviously so much more detail in the book - you get more of an impression of how important certain things are to the kids, like finding out Atticus is the best shot in the county, and Miss Maudie's profound comments; oh my gosh - where was Aunt Alexandra? I was looking forward to seeing her, and Scout's tea with the Missionary Society. But there is so much in the book, the film would run for hours if it included absolutely everything.
I think the film did a great job of portraying Tom Robinson and Arthur Radley as innocent people. It comes across in the film that they are the mockingbirds of the story.
(My niece has her GCSE exams at the mo and will have a paper on To Kill a Mockingbird. Her friend watched the film, instead of reading the book, so she'll miss out loads by doing that. Okay if it's a film studies exam, not okay for an Eng Lit one tho).

Spoiler:
I watched this last night and really enjoyed it. I am pretty sure I have watched it b4, but couldn't remember much of it. I agree that a lot was missed out from the book, it seemed a bit bare bones (of you know what I mean). I don't think you really got the idea of how poor they all were, and particularly the Ewells, or the fact that the Ewells were despised by the other people of Maycomb. However, it was very moving esp. the part when Scout starts talking to the men that have come to shoot Tom, and the end of course. Glad we are watching films too now, can't wait to watch perfume.
I have a long wkend this wkend so prob will watch it when in by myself _________________ Currently reading: The Human Stain by Philip Roth
