The first of these films based on David Peace's novels is showing on Thursday evening on C4. I have the first of his books 1974 if anyone is interested in reading it, I am happy to lend it. I have tried it several times and it's not for me - very short sentences, very dark, lots of swearing and not for the faint hearted! It's set in and around the town I was brought up and there is much speculation it is based on real people, but I would not know if there is any truth in that or not.

I really want to watch Red Riding. We are at the Theatre on Thursday evening so I'll have to record it - goodness knows when I'll actually watch it!

It's a play called Beef, written by John Godber and performed by the Hull Truck Theatre Company who are really good.  Everything I've ever seen them do before has been fabulous - really looking forward to it.

Here is a link to their current tours:

Watched the first one, and after all the fuss was rather underwhelmed
Might watch the second one, but only because OH likes the actor Paddy Considine.

Recorded it for my husband and he watched it on Sunday - I never had any intention of watching, could never get into the book plus I am not a huge fan of Sean Bean either - when we spoke last night he said he was not too sure he wanted to watch the rest.  Have not heard from my parents (can't imagine my mother will have enjoyed it!), they planned to watch because they know David Peace and are friends with his parents. Living in Yorkshire they say it has had lots of media attention locally.

Or maybe not... it clashes with the (Comic Relief) Apprentice !!

I've "enjoyed" these two so far - grim viewing at times but wonderfully acted.  As a reformed smoker (3 months now!) I was astonished by how much they all smoked in those days and the open plan office at the newspaper was just a haze of smoke - blended in nicely with the brown/tan/orange tones so popular in those days.  Indeed I swore I saw Mum and Dad's brown striped sofa in one of the scenes!  Looking forward to the last part next week.   I rarely watch the telly - ER if I can remember when and where it's on and Ten Years Younger so I'm definitely engrossed in Red Riding if it makes my watching list!

I have only watched the first one (set rest on record) - I will watch them as I'm intrigued. However I found myself reaching for the remote to change the picture mode. I did not like the 'atmospheric lighting'. At times I wondered if the plasma in the screen was going off !!!
You really have to concentrate on whats going on, a word here and there is vital to the story.

I saw an ad for this the other day. Is it set in Morley in Leeds and is it based on a true story?

Hi Glynis, I'm not sure where it is set. But some of it is based in truth as they have included The Yorkshire ripper. The second one is better than the first IMHO. I'm about halfway through watching it (hubby is not into it so I have to watch when I can).
I'm certainly going to look for the book/books now.
