Spoiler:
Well I watched it (sooo sorry for hogging it for so long Mel ).
I thought it was ok. I liked the beginning. Noah/Ryan Gosling was very cute - he saved the film for me, although I was very disappointed with the beard. It did him no favours I suppose it was the only way he could look older. The ending was pants. I just couldn't see Noah ending up looking like James Garner, so that bit, whilst a good idea, didn't seem credible. I really wanted it to. It was so obvious they were Noah and Allie. I found it dragged towards the end. It just felt like a love story for a love story's sake. When she decided to go back to him, the music made me cringe - one huge crescendo. I felt Ryan Gosling played his part very well - he seemed he really was in love. But she just seemed like any other pretty actress, I didn't root for her, she was a bit bland. I kept thinking, she's playing Clare in Time Traveler's Wife The Film Actually, as Allie she reminded me a lot of Billie Piper.
I'm sorry to sound less than enthusiastic. Loved the early scenes - couldn't take my eyes of Noah. Very cute I'd not heard of Ryan Gosling before. Thanks, Mel, for the loan. I'll get it sent to Debbie now!

OMG someone pass the tissues!
Spoiler:
I do agree that it wasn't a fantastic film and it was obvious that the story was about them but I liked how he could have been either of them (although why he'd remind his wife if he was the other guy would have been strange).
Loved the opening with the picturesque views and it must be so hard for families that do have someone suffering from memory loss but it was a great way for it to be told. Especially when she lapsed - when he cried it set me off too
Could see that her family wouldn't have been happy if she had stayed with Noah but for her mum to suddenly say she was in the same position when she was young just seemed a bit weird.
At the start I couldn't beliveve that Allie was supposed to be 17... thought she was like late 20's then
Gonna watch the deleted/alternate scenes now!
Thanks for lending it out Mel! Prob wouldn't have watched it otherwise.

Glad you liked it Debbie. Did you think Ryan Gosling a dish? Know what you mean about the mum - but don't you think he looked horrible?
Pooh, I forgot to watch the deleted scenes. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Ssshhhh Stu's a member here
Yup but only with his beard (weird since don't like guys like that) but without he seemed a bit shrimpy to me - prefer a man. But he looked exactly like Noah Wyle from ER with the beard! Hmm also James Marsden but although they tried to make him nice he was just annoying.
And Rachel reminds me of a cross between a Canadian/French singer I like and Jennifer Garner (yuck!).
Deleted scenes actually told parts of the story that I did question:
Spoiler:
1. When Noah goes for lunch at Allie's parents and sitting at the table then asks to be excused and goes to the loo. Allie follows and apologises for them (after being told she's going to a different college).
2 & 11. Alternate love scenes which are just kinda more racy but exactly the same, just a couple of bits taken out.
3. Noah drunk sitting on the porch with his dad, someone else and Fin (guy he works with) which would have been before Allie and her family leave when Fin said he was consoling him and was a mess.
4. Allie's mum comes in after collecting the post (when there's 1 from Noah) and Allie sitting crying asks if there's any to be told no.
5. At the care home when Noah goes to get food for Allie the nurse tells him there's a couple that have been separated for 50 years and the guy has come back to court her... so practically the same as his story but he denies he's there to court Allie.
6. Noah's dad goes up onto the roof while Noah is painting the house. They talk and he says restoring the house isn't gonna bring her back. may also be the point which indicates he could be ill as he just seems to die (unless I missed it).
7. Allie goes back to visit Noah. In the hotel she spends ages getting ready finding something to wear and is hurrying and nearly falls over in street before getting into car.
8. Scene by the sea/river where they're catching crabs and Allie asks who Martha is. Back at the house she goes to get one of his sweaters and notices her painting on the wall.
9. Just after Allie goes back into the nursing home after meeting the family (who she can't remember) in the garden, Noah gives his kids the deeds to his house like his dad gave him his house.
10. Not sure where Allie is but she phones Noah and he doesn't answer. Not sure where that bit was from.
12. The story of the notebook. Noah in the care home after Allie is sedated with her lapse and he's talking to the doc about how she was first diagnosed - lost car keys, couldn't remember where she lived and how she was in early stages of alzheimers. She writes the notebook knowing she'll have forgotten all about it and asks him to read it to her and she'll remember him and come back. Then Noah collapses which would then be the bit where he's rushed off before going to see her for the last time.

I watched this some time ago now and I really enjoyed it. I liked the theme about the book and that Noah was so dedicated to Allie through to the end - he never gave up on her. I thought it was a lovely story of unconditional love which of course made me cry.

I just watched this this morning. I couldn't sleep because I've got back ache and I thought I would take the opportunity of having the tv to myself to watch a slushing movie. I really enjoyed it for what it was - a heart-string pulling mushy romance. I was crying almost all the way through esp. the parts set in present day - very moving, but also frightening. Gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
