This is the first Tess Gerritsen I have read, aquiring this book as a 'swap'.

Very, VERY chilling read and not for the squeemish. It centers around Dr.Catherine Cordell a brilliant trauma surgeon who was the sole survivor of a sociopathic killer and rapist 2 years ago. She managed to escape and shot the murderer. However, new cases - with the same MO are now turning up in Boston where she has started her new life. Soon Catherine finds herself confronting the terror from her past, and is the centre of attention for a 'new' madman.
Catherine uses her medical skills to save lives. The killer is nicknmaed "The surgeon" & he uses his knowledge to not only kill people but to inflict maximum pain & terror on his victims, removing a trophy from each one. You can almost hear the clink of instuments on stainless steel trays, just in the perifery of the vision of the victim...Oh yes my friends, the victims are awake......
Every second of this book is mind blowingly brilliant. You think you know where the story is taking you....then it does 3 u turns! There are some very interesting relationships between the police investigating the case, particulary a female detective, who is pushing against the macho world of the Boston PD.
I'm sure there will be a sequel to this - I'm certainly going to look for  more of her work.
And I'd give this 10/10 without hesitation.
Zan

The Surgeon is part of a series, so I would suggest u read them. Here is the order to be read in:

Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles
1. The Surgeon (2001)
2. The Apprentice (2002)
3. The Sinner (2003)
4. Body Double (2004)
5. Vanish (2005)
6. The Mephisto Club (2006)
7. Keeping the Dead (2008)

I thought I recognised this one, I've just checked and I read it back in 2003!

I've 5 of her books and enjoyed them all, but I've not read one for a year or so now - great escapism

I have read and enjoyed, Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs & Jeffery Deaver. But I must say Gerritsen seems to take it to a whole new level.
I'm now hunting my TBR pile for something as engaging!
I'm still plowing through Jean Plaidy & I have still to complete Heavy Weather (si-fi) I misplaced the latter book and have had the house upside down looking for it! I re-discovered it yesterday in a box of Christmas things.....I must have carried it upstairs in the box & forgot to take it out...sigh! The penalties of middle age

Yes I think I'll look for the apprentice next.
Rizolli is a great character - not your normal female player.
I just found a Deaver in my TBR pile - The Twelfth card. I'll give that a shot tonight.

I read that one just a few weeks ago.  It was the first Deaver I had read but I enjoyed it and will certainly read more of his when I get the chance.

I have to put the movie out of my mind when I read Deaver.
In my mind Lincoln was white, and Sachs was Jodie Foster.......lol
I have not read either the clockmaker one or sleeping doll - I'll make a note to avoid the latter!

I went to hear Jeffrey Deaver speak last year - he was fascinating - a bit spooky though. Unfortunately, I dont like his books!
