You should give The Russian Concubine by Kate Furnivall a try. It isn't what it sounds. It is set in China and although it has the odd violent bit I enjoyed it. Her next book The Red Scarf or Under a Blood Red Sky was even better.(that was set in Russia). You have to be a bit careful when buying her books as they have at less to different titles. Her next one is
THE GIRL FROM JUNCHOW in the US and THE CONCUBINE'S SECRET in the UK.
