FEBRUARY BOOK CHOICES - YOU DECIDE!

Which books would you like to be read in February? All you have to do is vote for one of the books below. Read the blurbs and see if there is anything that looks interesting and the book with the most votes by 19th January will be chosen to be read from 1st February.

There is also another poll running so please take a look at that one too as there may be something on that list. There will be two books chosen but you don't have to read both if you don't want to.

The polls end midnight 19th January!

------------------------------------

1.
Notes On A Scandal - Zoe Heller £6.39 256 pages

When Sheba arrives Barbara senses that she will be different from the rest of her staff-room colleagues. Sure enough, Sheba starts an affair with a pupil and is caught. When all the dust settles and Sheba's life falls apart, Barbara is there for her.

2.
One hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Maquez £6.39 432 pages

This magical realist novel tells the history of the Buendias family, the founders of Macondo, a remote South American settlement. In the world of the novel there is a Spanish galleon beached in the jungle, a flying carpet, and an iguana in a woman's womb.

3.
Bel Canto - Anne Patchett £6.39 336 pages

Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of the powerful businessman Mr. Hosokawa. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening — until a band of gunwielding terrorists takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, a moment of great beauty, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different continents become compatriots, intimate friends, and lovers.

4.
Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell £6.39 544 pages

In his captivating third novel, Mitchell erases the boundaries of language, genre, and time to offer a meditation on humanity's dangerous will to power, and where it may lead.

5.
Bordeau Housewives - Daisy Waugh £5.59 400 pages

This work introduces the perfect Summer read for 2006. "Bordeaux Housewives" is a new romantic comedy combining a heady mix of sunshine, sex, Sancerre and secrets. When an ordinary English family swap dreary suburbia and the rat race for the glorious countryside of France, they have no idea just how much their lives are going to change. For in addition to the culture shock, they have been selected to appear in a reality TV show about their Good Life lifestyle. But they also have a secret life which they need to hide from the cameras! Meanwhile, at the local bar, another expat is finding that local attractions amount to more than wine, cheese and sunflowers!

6.
I know this much is true - Wally Lamb £7.19 912 pages

With his stunning debut novel, She's Come Undone, Wally Lamb won the adulation of critics and readers with his mesmerizing tale of one woman's painful yet triumphant journey of self-discovery. Now, this brilliantly talented writer returns with I Know This Much Is True, a heartbreaking and poignant multigenerational saga of the reproductive bonds of destruction and the powerful force of forgiveness. A masterpiece that breathtakingly tells a story of alienation and connection, power and abuse, devastation and renewal--this novel is a contemporary retelling of an ancient Hindu myth. A proud king must confront his demons to achieve salvation. Change yourself, the myth instructs, and you will inhabit a renovated world.

7.
The Red Tent - Anita Diamant £3.99 336 pages

The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers, wives and daughters.

I didn't vote for Cloud Atlas, but I would be quite keen to read it if it wins, it has been on my tbr for ages! I have already read Perfume so will be able to focus on just one this month
