JULY BOOK CHOICES - YOU DECIDE!
Which books would you like to be read from July? All you have to do is vote for one of the books below. Read the blurbs and see if there is anything that looks interesting. The book with the most votes by 26th June will be chosen to be read from 1st July.
There is also another poll running so please take a look at that one too as there may be something on that list. There will be two books chosen but you don't have to read both if you don't want to.
1. Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons - 240 pages
Flora has been expensively educated to do everything but earn her own living. When she is orphaned at 20, she decides her only option is to go and live with her relatives, the Starkadders, at Cold Comfort Farm. What relatives though. Flora feels it incumbent upon her to bring order into the chaos.
2. The Walled Garden by Catherine Dunne - 326 pages
Beth flew the coop as soon as she could, while James, her dutiful brother stayed in Dublin, raising a family near their mother, Alice. Now Alice is dying, Beth returns to the shabby grandeur of her childhood home. This is a novel exploring the fragile nature of a mother-daughter relationship.
3. This Charming Man by Marian Keyes - 704 pages
'Everybody remembers where they were the day they heard that Paddy de Courcy was getting married'
Lola has every reason to be interested in who Paddy's marrying - because although she's his girlfriend, she definitely isn't the bride-to-be. Heartbroken, she flees the city for a cottage by the sea. But will Lola's retreat prove as idyllic as she hopes?
Not if journalist Grace has anything to do with it. She wants the inside story on the de Courcy engagement and thinks Lola holds the key. Grace knew Paddy a long time ago. But why can't she forget him?
Grace's sister, Marnie, might have the answer but she also has issues with the past. Her family is wonderful but they can't take away memories of her first love: a certain Paddy de Courcy. What will it take for Marnie to be able to move on?
And what of the future Mrs de Courcy ... Alicia is determined to be the perfect politician's wife. But does she know the real Paddy de Courcy?
Four very different women. One awfully charming man. And the dark secret that binds them all...
4. Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella - 416 pages
Lexi wakes up in a hospital bed after a car accident, thinking it's 2004 and she's a twenty-five-year old with crooked teeth and a disastrous love life. But, to her disbelief, she learns it's actually 2007 - she's twenty-eight, her teeth are straight, she's the boss of her department - and she's married! To a good-looking millionaire! How on earth did she land the dream life??! She can't believe her luck - especially when she sees her stunning new home. She's sure she'll have a fantastic marriage once she gets to know her husband again. He's drawn up a 'manual of our marriage', which should help. But as she learns more about her new self, chinks start to appear in the perfect life. All her old colleagues hate her. A rival is after her job. Then a dishevelled, sexy guy turns up...and lands a new bombshell. What happened to her? Will she ever remember? And what will happen if she does?
5. The Beach by Alex Garland - 448 pages
Richard is drawn into a strange conversation in a hotel. He hears of a secret island Garden of Eden hidden in the scattered islands of a Thai marine park. Next morning, he finds a map pinned to his door and the man who put it there has slashed his wrists. The challenge is irresistible and he sets off on a perilous journey in search of Shangri-La.
6. The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton - 350 pages
A lost child: On the eve of the First World War, a little girl is found abandoned on a ship to Australia. A mysterious woman called the Authoress had promised to look after her - but has disappeared without a trace. A terrible secret: On the night of her twenty-first birthday, Nell Andrews learns a secret that will change her life forever. Decades later, she embarks upon a search for the truth that leads her to the windswept Cornish coast and the strange and beautiful Blackhurst Manor, once owned by the aristocratic Mountrachet family.A mysterious inheritance: On Nell's death, her granddaughter, Cassandra, comes into an unexpected inheritance. Cliff Cottage and its forgotten garden are notorious amongst the Cornish locals for the secrets they hold - secrets about the doomed Mountrachet family and their ward Eliza Makepeace, a writer of dark Victorian fairytales. It is here that Cassandra will finally uncover the truth about the family, and solve the century-old mystery of a little girl lost.
7. The Life You Longed for by Maribeth Fischer - 336 pages
Grace's son, Jack, is a miracle. At three years old, he is fighting a mysterious and deadly disease that doctors predicted would kill him as a baby. Everyone around the family credits Grace's blind dedication with helping Jack survive. But perhaps not everyone. Grace's world is upended when she discovers that she's under investigation for Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, a psychological disorder whereby a mother makes her otherwise healthy child sick in order to gain approval and attention for herself. Soon Grace is in a constant state of suspicion - of every doctor, nurse, friend, acquaintance...and even her husband. And the private secrets she has kept finally come to light. The Life You Longed For is gripping, suspenseful, and the definition of a page-turner - readers will want to skip to the end to figure out if the accusations are true. By mixing this controversial topic with endearing characters and a delicately layered plot, Maribeth Fischer has established herself as a voice to be reckoned with among today's finest women writers.

It's supposed to be summer, so I'm voting for The Beach. If we don't actually get any sunshine this summer at least I can pretend..... _________________ 2008 '1001 Challenge' Books: 9 |
