MARCH BOOK CHOICES - YOU DECIDE!
Which books would you like to be read in March? All you have to do is vote for one of the books below. Read the blurbs and see if there is anything that looks interesting and the book with the most votes by 21st February will be chosen to be read from 1st March.
There is also another poll running so please take a look at that one too as there may be something on that list. There will be two books chosen but you don't have to read both if you don't want to.
The polls end midnight 21st February!
--------------------------------------------
1.
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult £3.39 432 pages
My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.
2.
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden £6.99 512 pages
A seductive and evocative epic on an intimate scale, that tells the extraordinary story of a geisha girl. Summoning up more than twenty years of Japan's most dramatic history, it uncovers a hidden world of eroticism and enchantment, exploitation and degradation. From a small fishing village in 1929, the tale moves to the glamorous and decadent heart of Kyoto in the 1930s, where a young peasant girl is sold as servant and apprentice to a renowned geisha house. She tells her story many years later from the Waldorf Astoria in New York; it exquisitely evokes another culture, a different time and the details of an extraordinary way of life. It conjures up the perfection and the ugliness of life behind rice-paper screens, where young girls learn the arts of geisha - dancing and singing, how to wind the kimono, how to walk and pour tea, and how to beguile the most powerful men.
3.
The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien £6.39 208 pages
Within the boundaries of this novel the reader will find: a murder thriller; a comic satire about an archetypal village police force; a surrealistic vision of eternity; the story of a tender, brief unrequited love affair between a man and his bicycle; and a chilling fable of unending guilt.
4.
Notes on a Scandal by Zoe Heller £6.39 256 pages
When Sheba arrives Barbara senses that she will be different from the rest of her staff-room colleagues. Sure enough, Sheba starts an affair with a pupil and is caught. When all the dust settles and Sheba's life falls apart, Barbara is there for her.
6.
The Valkyries: An Encounter with Angels by Paulo Coelho 256 pages, £6.39
This is a modern-day adventure story featuring Paulo's supernatural encounter with angels -- who appear as warrior women and travel through the Mojave desert on their motorbikes. Haunted by a devastating curse, Paulo is instructed by his mysterious spiritual master to embark upon a journey -- to find and speak to his guardian angel in an attempt to confront and overcome his dark past. The Valkyries is a compelling account of this forty day quest into the searing heat of the Mojave Desert, where Paulo and his wife, Chris, encounter the Valkyries -- warrior women who travel the desert on motorcycles, spreading the word of angels. This exotic spiritual odyssey is a rare combination of truth, myth, imagination and inspiration. Ultimately it is a story about being able to forgive our past and believe in our future.

I have read the first three - The Third Policeman is very good but a bit off beat. (no pun intended)
I also own the Valkyries but it looks like Notes on a Scandal is in the lead and I don't have that one. So I may HAVE to buy yet another book. |

Off topic I know, but how bizarre - I was reading about 'Tom Swifities' today. Will post them in 'wordplay of the day' tomorrow (thurs).

aaaaaaaaaarghhhh - I can't keep up - I've still got to read Under The Skin from last month (my son saw that and picked it up before I had a chance - "it's a bit weird" which is quite some critique from him!)
I think Notes was written for Judi Dench. Haven't caught the film yet (usually a disappointment after a book) but could imagine her saying the lines as I read them. _________________ http://www.readitswapit.co.uk/UserBooks.aspx?UserID=13213

| I've already read my sisters keeper which is why I didn't vote for it. Good book on a tough subject and one I would recommend to others. |

Helen, My Sister's Keeper is a great book. I would have probably voted for that, but read it within the last year. I would definitely recommend it though!
I'm pleased Notes On A Scandal won - I had a look at my copy (which has been sitting on my tbr pile for a long time), and it does look really good. _________________ My Blog
