MARCH BOOK CHOICES - YOU DECIDE!
Which books would you like to be read in March? All you have to do is vote for one of the books below. Read the blurbs and see if there is anything that looks interesting and the book with the most votes by 21st February will be chosen to be read from 1st March.
There is also another poll running so please take a look at that one too as there may be something on that list. There will be two books chosen but you don't have to read both if you don't want to.
The polls end midnight 21st February!
--------------------------------------------
1.
Property by Valerie Martin £5.59 224 pages
Manon Gaudet is unhappily married to the owner of a Louisiana sugar plantation. She longs to be free of her suffocating domestic situation. As a wedding present, Manon is given a slave, Sarah. Amid all this, is rising slave unrest. And if the attacks reach Manon's house, where will Sarah's allegiances lie?
2.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee £6.99 309 pages
To Kill a Mockingbird is primarily a novel about growing up under extraordinary circumstances in the 1930s in the Southern United States. The story covers a span of three years, during which the main characters undergo significant changes. Scout Finch lives with her brother Jem and their father Atticus in the fictitious town of Maycomb, Alabama. Maycomb is a small, close-knit town, and every family has its social station depending on where they live, who their parents are, and how long their ancestors have lived in Maycomb.
3.
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver £3.99 from Amazon, 626 pages
In the heart of darkness, circa 1959. Kingsolver sends her naﶥ missionaries into the Belgian Congo, where they discover all is not right with the world. A terrific popular success, this novel is also an ambitious and challenging literary work, deftly balancing numerous narrative voices. Extremely informative about the diamond industry, colonialism and the bloody modern origins of independent Congo and Zaire.
4.
The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene £6.61 240 pages
During a vicious persecution of the clergy in Mexico, a worldly priest, the "whisky priest" is on the run. With the police closing in his routes of escape are being shut off, his chances getting fewer. But compassion and humanity force him along the road to his destiny.
5.
A Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier £3.99 272 pages
'Remember me when I'm gone' just took on a whole new meaning ...Laura Byrd is in trouble. Three weeks ago she and her friends found themselves alone in one of the coldest, most remote places on earth. Her friends set out in search of help, and now Laura realises that they are not coming back. So she gathers her remaining supplies and sets out on an extraordinary journey. Meanwhile in another city, more and more people arrive every day. Each has a different story to tell, but their accounts have one thing in common -- it was their final journey. For this is the city of the dead. And the link between this city and Laura's journey lies at the heart of Kevin Brockmeier's remarkable novel. "The Brief History of the Dead" tells a magical story about our lives -- about our place in the world, our connections with each other, and what happens to us all after our deaths. It is a story of spellbinding power and imagination, which resonates long after the final page.

Wow they are all excellent choices. Took me a while to choose. I've read Property which is an interesting book to discuss and an enjoyable read too. I chose To Kill a Mockingbird as I have it on my tbr shelf and know I should read it. Everyone I know who's read it absolutely loves it. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I have voted for Brief History of the Dead - this kind of subject really interests me. But I think I would be happy if any of these books were picked. To Kill A Mockingbird is my favourite book of all time, so I would be happy to read it again. Property is another one on my tbr pile, so if that one is picked, I would be pleased to read that too. _________________ My Blog

I will read this again if I get chance - but even if I don't, I will definitely be joining in with this discussion. This book is probably my favourite ever! _________________ My Blog

I enjoyed this too when I read it, picked it up as one of the Big Read Top 100 when I decided to get a few more of those under my belt.
Looking forward to the discussion. |
