Can you all please help me?

I need encouragement to stop acquiring books!  My TBR is growing at an alarming rate and we don't have room to accommodate any more books.  So, I have decided it is going to be a case of 2 books out for every 1 in.  Small step, but surely it will help!

Can you please remind me off this, and shout at me if you hear me getting more books?  We are meant to be moving at some point this year and David will go loopy if I take the 400 odd books we have at the moment!

Oh dear Katey - you made me laugh!  Do you really think you have asked the right people to help you stop getting more books?

No - I dont think so!!!!     My TBR has topped 720 now and with my keepers aswell and my box of mooch books my house resembles a library.

I want to stop - honest - but I cant!

I'm afraid I agree with Anne, we are probably the wrong people to ask for help.

Whenever I'm overwhelmed I try to have a look through my TBR at it's oldest inhabitants and decide whether I really am likely to ever read them since I pass them over each time I choose. If that is the case, I usually find I can part with some.

And that's when I try not to get any new ones in too. At the moment, despite christmas, I think my out rate is slightly higher than my in rate, but there's not much in it!

Good Luck!

Hahaha, oh dear Katey - I sympathise with you I really do but you are definitly asking the wrong people.

However, I am buying at a faster rate than I am reading at the mo too and I really like your idea of getting rid if two for every one that you buy - if you like we could make a pact to make sure we both do this and we can support each other?
lovely treez

You can do it, Katey!  I haven't swapped on RiSi since March and have managed to reduce TBR considerably,  I haven't been buying as many as I've been making more use of my local library - are you a member?  It would be great for Zach too as they have rhythm time and reading for little ones in a lot of libraries and you can reserve newly published books too.

If I can do it, you can!!
Karen

I'm with Treez on this one Katey, I've done it too, so there is hope! May be you and Smiler can start a support network where you call each other up when you get into dangerous book acquiring territory?!

I stopped smoking a lot of years ago, I stopped biting my nails I have managed to lose one and half stone last year. Stop buying books - impossible.  Tried and failed many times.   .  Good luck, hope you have more will power than me.

Sarah, it's a deal!  If I am close to crumbling I will text you!

i am also going to have a bit of a cull I think of my bookshelves again  get rid of those that I am never likely to read.

Agreed then! Oooh, I sort of feel like I'm achieving something? Haha!
I'm glad that I already bought 5 this week though - at least I have had a bit of a book fix! lol

If your going to have a cull maybe you could take them to Sheffield?

...ooops no, cos I cant have them anyway   haha!!
katey

I had a book pull earlier and took 14 off my shelf, they are going to charity first thing tomorrow!  Does that mean i can bring 7 in?!!  LOL!

Yes it definitly does! You made the rules!
katey

Well, I have failed miserably!  I bought 6 (count 'em, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) books today   I did get rid of those 14 the other day though, and they were all on my wishlist....

Seriously now, no more books until 31st Jan!
blueflower

That isn't really failure.  If you had replace the 14 books with 8 or more books, that would have been failure.  You only got 6 books so that is success - in fact you are allowed another book!

I completely agree with Gwen - you have not failed!

I think you're doing very well in fact! I did the same a few years ago and only kept my fave reads. The rest I took to work and people helped themselves. The only problem was everyone else started doing the same and I ended up with a load of theirs instead

but actually its not a bad idea!

I'm doing really well with the pact and havent bought any new books for a whole week (yay me!) but I just wanted to check....gifts dont count do they?
katey

Gifts don't count, you are doing brilliantly!  Since Sunday I haven't got any apart from some mooches which I had requested before I made the pact.  I plan to get rid of some at teh end of teh month and acquire some new ones!!!!
katey

5 out this week and 2 in
eightlegs

Well done Katey, you are definitely doing better than me at the mo!
katey

More out than in this week too!!!  I think about 16 out and 5 in
eightlegs

Well done Katey, keep it going!
