Just thought it best to introduce myself before I check out anywhere else on this site.

I'm a 25 year old girlie who's been living in the UK (Aberdeen to be more precise) for the last 5 and a half years now. I am Swedish originally.

When not working at an oil and gas servicing company, or trying desperately to get fit at the local gym, I love going to the cinema and reading books. Unfortunately I dont manage to read as many as I would like to though, and I think one of the main reasons is that a - I dont't always know what to read, and therefore have sooo many different books around that I cant just stick to one, and b - I have no other 'incentive' to read (apart from the joy of reading itself) to finish a book!So I figured a place like this could be good to start getting tips, and also discuss books with others

On the subject of books and authors that are my favourites - too many to mention! I love old classics, particulary swedish and norwegian ones, like Selma Lagerlöf and Wilhelm Moberg, or any of Astrid Lindgrens books - but those are a given being Swedish and all and not sure that many in the UK will know much about these - but I also like a bit of everything else, Jane Austen, Cecelia Ahern, Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, Oscar Wilde, Marian Keyes, Eva Rice, etcetc.. oh well there you go - I mentioned some.

I've never read any Swedish authors (well not that I am aware of anyway!). I may have to check out some of the ones you have mentioned.

I'm sure you'll find inspiration for your reading here. I've heard of Astrid Lindgren - love her Pippi Longstocking books

and of course Alf Proyson of Mrs Pepperpot fame and the illustrator Hilda Offen. But that's as far as my knowledge goes I'm afraid

You should post a list of Swedish & Norwegian authors you recommend on the site.

Welcome to BB. I think you should find inspiration here. And as Glynis says you should recommend some Swedish and Norwegian books to us - been a boring Brit I can only speak on language so if you can recommend some that have been translated in to English that would be good. I have read a couple of Henning Mankell crime books if that counts.

I shall try and think up a few that are translated into English - although both my two favourites will most likely not be - Nils Holgerson (about a boy who gets shrunk for being bad to animals by a 'tomte' and spends the next few months travelling around Sweden with a flock of wild geese - you learn a LOT of Swedish geography and history here - hence it was used as a school book for a long time) by Selma Lagerlöf and the four books in the Utvandrar series ( a story about swedish settlers moving to America back in the 19th century) by Wilhelm Moberg

a good Norwegian author I can reccomend is Jostein Gaarder - most famous for his book Sophies world - which I really liked!

well, there is also of course two really famous Norwegian writers,

Henrik Ibsen (A dolls house, etc) and Knut Hamsun (Hunger, etc)
Personally - I'm not amazed by these - however I blame school for that - they are 'must read' authors and had to write papers and analyze the writers and books on more than one occassion. I don't like reading for the sake of 'having to' read something, so I didnt enjoy it.

That being said, I might give them another go now that there are a few years since I went to school - who knows - I might enjoy them now!

Hi Carelia, and welcome to BB! You'll have a great time on here as everyone is really friendly. I'm afraid my knowledge of the authors mentioned goes as far as Jostein Gaarder as I've read Sophie's World and Through a Glass, Darkly, which I thought was a great book. I will defintely check out the other's though as I'm always looking to add to my collection of ever~increasing books

Welcome to BB. We're all book addicts on here, so you're bound to get some inspiration on what to read. Our "books of the month" discussions are a good way to get involved at the start.

I've not heard of any of the Swedish authors you mentioned, other than Henrik Ibsen. I had to act / study A Doll's House for A'Level Theatre Studies many moons ago. I enjoyed it, but haven't read any of his other plays.
