New thread - Reading Dares, Truths and Promises

When moving house recently I came across some cards from the Reading Group Toolbox I used when setting up a book group in 2005, and I thought I'd post them here as hoping they'll spark some interesting discussion!

Here's the first one:

Truth
I confess I struggled on with...

...and wish I hadn't
.

Well I can answer that one in a flash...I confess I struggled on with Midnight's Children and wish I hadn't!

Easy for me too - The House of Doctor Dee by Peter Ackroyd. And I think I wouldn't have carried on if it hadn't been on the 1001 list and I wanted to count it as read!

for me... jonathon strange and mr.norrell - stuck it out and felt disappointed and deflated at the end. couldn't decide whether i liked it or not but in time over much thought have come to realise it was more the latter. waaaaay too long and drawn out for me...

For me...The Time Traveller's Wife...I gave up on it and now wish I had read it because everyone else raves about it ...

Cloud Atlas for me. It seemed to be raved about by everyone and so I stuck with it to the end hoping that I eventually would "get it" but I didn't and wished I had spent the time reading something I know I would have enjoyed. The Time Travellers Wife came to me shortly afterwards and I ditched that one very quickly and have not regreted it, as I did with Midnight's Children too. Taught me to give something a go before ditching it but if I am reading for pleasure and the book does not deliver, move on!

I strugglesd with Attonement - Ian McEwan and gave up after about 100 pages or so. I wish I hadn't and I think I'll try and go back to it this year. I'm currently reading Crime and Punishment which I gave up on last year and I've come back to. It is an interesting story but my goodness it's hard work!!

Poppy Shakespeare - I still haven't got an award for finishing it....

Wicked - it took me ages to get through it and it just wasnt worth it. However at least now I can tell others not to waste their time with it.

The biggest disappointment for me last year was The Bourne Identity.

I loved Cloud Atlas and even got my dad a copy for Xmas 2007!

I also thought The Time Traveller's Wife was over-rated, but I still gave it as a Secret Santa prezzie in work for someone who I thought would prefer it more than me.

Moby Dick!!! I thought it was awful and only read it because it was for uni!  It was so painful

I liked Wicked and have read the follow ups. :blush  I was a bit unsure about some of it and couldn't understand how you could tell the difference between Animals and animals when speaking.  But on the whole it was quite good.

I have given up on a few books but I am struggling to remember the ones I read all the way through and wished I hadn't.  There was one last year about a boy growing up near the sea which everyone else liked but I didn't.  But I can't remember what it was called.  Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd wasn't really worth the effort either.

This one works for me too - I'd like all those hours of my life back please. It should have been wonderful....but somehow it wasn't

I gave up The Time Travelers Wife and We Need To Talk About Kevin - most people seem to rave about them, but I just hated them both.
The one I stuck with that I regret was Ian McEwan's Amsterdam - thank goodness it was only slim
