I wanted to read this as it is on the 80 crime reads around the world list:

1. Greenland

The murder takes place in Copenhagen, but it is to the unforgiving Greenland coast that Smilla Jaspersen follows the trail. Peter Hoeg's book, with its slow pacing and heightened atmospherics, was surely the one that whetted the international appetite for Scandinavian crime.

I Love reading wintry books when the weather starts to get colder, so look forward to starting this. My current read- Let the Right One In is set in Sweden during a cold snap in October/ November -- I'm really enjoying it and hope that Miss Smilla makes a good follow-up

Had a lot of time on my hands so I read this from start to finish over the space of a day and a half.
Very strange is my initial reaction! Will let it settle for a few days and I will try and write something more coherent

Hehe, there was a copy of this in the chippy tonight! I might have considered taking it for anyone who'd like to join in the read for this month, but it was quite an old copy with yellowed pages & the cover like this:

I have also watched the film, but some time ago- I think it might have been on TV quite late at night, I stumbled across it and ended up watching it all ...? ...but will have to see if I can track it down again after I finish the book :>

Finished this over the weekend.

Overall I enjoyed it. I loved resourceful Smilla, and her beautiful descriptions of the cold snow & ice. The description of her being like the indefatigable toy tank was spot on

The one area where I struggled was the second section, on the boat. The characters here were for me almost just a list of names - Verlaine, Lukas, etc. Only Urs the chef and Jakkelson stood out for me.

I'd really love to see the film again to see the chilly landscapes.

If you enjoyed this I recommend the Millenium trilogy by Steig Larsson - featuring a similarly kick-ass heroine Lisbeth Salander

Took a little while to get into this, I felt it kept going off at a tangent and just as I was about to toss it aside it got back on track and I stuck with it a bit longer. There were too many threads to the plot and a lot of characters that were quite hard to keep track of sometimes. This was a swap with a friend and she had a list of characters tucked in the back and I must admit that was very handy, I used it quite a bit to keep track of everyone.

Spoiler:

There is always the chance that something is lost in the translation when reading books orginally written in another language but even allowing for that I was very disappointed with how this story ended.
Would give it 5 out of 10 but since I have to give whole stars I can't decide whether to drop it to 2 or boost it to 3!

I have not seen the film (unless it's under a different title) so I might see if I can find it and see how it compares.
