Add me to the list of Crossed Bones winners! I have no clue when I entered this competition ~ but it was a nice surprise! I like getting free books that I wouldn't normally choose for myself
jobar

Add me to the ever growing list of winners of Crossed Bones...LOL, mine came yesterday, not sure when I entered a Penguin competition, but do so love freebies !!
Tigerlily

I won an ice scraper for my car!
dingsy

On Thursday I received a copy of Val McDermids, "Beneath the Bleeding", direct from the publisher. It said "winner" on it, but I've no idea what the competition was....
Tigerlily

Well done Elaine, and everyone who won Crossed Bones.
dingsy

Thanks Glynis-just wish I knew how I "won"!

A nice surprise. I bet it's niggling you which comp you entered. Did you enter a few and forget?
dingsy

Very possibly-although I think it might have been through the publishers website-first to reply to the email, type of comp. I remember doing one recently and replied so quickly I thought I had a good chance. It's not really my taste, but Brian's quite happy!

I got an e mail from Meet The Author (again!).  I've won a signed copy of Since I Dont Have You by Louise Candlish.   I'm doing really well with competitions this year, I think I have had more prizes this year than my whole life put together!!
Carelia

where do you guys sign up for all these competitions?  I want to have a go!!!
annecater

Carelia - sometimes I just go 'surfing' the net and look for competitions and free offers.  I then get regular e mails notifying me about competitions.   I think this one was from Meet The Author - if you google that term, I'm sure you will find it.
There is a section of this forum that notifys of competitions too, keep your eyes peeled for that too.
It's becoming quite an addiction for me!
Good luck x
Tigerlily

Well done Anne

Carelia go to www.prizefinder.co.uk where comps are listed in categorical order. You'll see our comps listed in the book section, along with many others. Good luck.

Was just thinking this morning I should enter more comps.
Carelia

oh wow - I certainly found a way of keeping busy during lunch there!

World Book Day shortlisted freebie

Here's another one--the first two people to email

frogface23@hotmail.co.uk

will receive free copies of Eliza Graham's Playing with the Moon, shortlisted for the World Book Day 2008 Book to talk about award.

The idea is that if they like the book they vote for it  (see site below) and pass it on to another interested reader before the deadline (beginning of March). Eliza is a new author and her marketing bods are doing this to raise her profile so she can compete with some of the well-known names on the shortlist.

Just had a courier delivery from Harper Collins. I got Notes from an Exhibition by Patrick Gale as a winner from doing their surveys. Hurray!

(And I did another survey yesterday and plumped for Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier so I might end up with that one too!!!)
Tigerlily

Well done Sarah   What a great surprise. Enjoy the book.

Competitions

I have just won a signed hardback copy of Minette Walters latest novel The Chameleon's Shadow from Pan Macmillan.  I enter loads of competitions but very rarely win so it was a nice surprise.
annecater

Well done Mags - I have that one on TBR

I received a copy of Rebecca Gowers' When To Walk direct from the publisher today.
annecater

I cant believe I've won another comp!  I've never been so lucky, just got the following email:

Hi Anne

I’m pleased to inform you that you have won a copy of the new book Smart Health Choices, a competition you entered on health and fitness website www.KeeptheDoctorAway.co.uk.

Your prize will be sent shortly to the address you left us. Please let me know if you do not receive it within a week.

Thanks for entering!

eightlegs

Well done Lisa - that was quick! Fingers crossed now for the rest of us
annecater

Oh well done Lisa x
lovely treez

Well done everyone and goodness, that was quick on the Easter Egg hunt one!!   I got an e mail from Random House to say I've won a copy of The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway to review.  I love winning books.
Tigerlily

Well done Lisa, that's excellent. Hope you enjoy your spa voucher. Well done Treez too.
Daniela-26

Wow well done Lisa that was super quick!!

Well done Treez too, I've entered loads of book comps recently but haven't won. It's great to get a free book through the door!
lisa2062

I was surprised on the speed as well! Well done Treez, sounds like another good book. Lisa x
lovely treez

Have just had The Gone-Away World delivered, it's a biggie, and not due for publication in hb until June so I'm a trend-setter!!  So much for the TBR pile...
blueflower

I enter loads of competitions and draws to win a book but I am not a lucky person and don't win - until today.

After completing the a survey I had to choose one of four books in case my name was selected to win a prize.  I had three of the books and won't like to read the fourth, so I just ticked a box of one of the ones I had- why bother when you never win!

Guess what - I won, so now I can't decide if I am lucky or not.

Ah well, I can always swap it I suppose.
eightlegs

Not sure Gwen whether that's good or bad luck.

Sounds like it was a Harper Collins survey? I won a book from them, Notes from an exhibition so was quite chuffed, especially as it just appeared, I wasn't expecting it. Yet with the next survey they emailed me to say I'd not won!!!
blueflower

I was surprised when my book turned up.  It was a survey on a chick lit type book and I was very scathing of it!
lovely treez

Well done, Gwen, I think?
eightlegs

I did that one too Gwen, and I wasn't very positive but I guess they want honest replies and the draw is supposed to be random!
annecater

Well done Gwen - you did make me chuckle though!
lisa2062

Well I receive my prize from Random House today, but there was no Cupcake spa voucher   . Have sent them an email, so hopefully I'll get one soon. Lisa x
Tigerlily

Hope you sort it too, Lisa
Tigerlily

Just picked up an email from Scholastic Book Club saying I've won Guess How Much I Love You goodies. Really pleased
blueflower

Well done Glynis.

Me too!!

Another well done.
Tigerlily

Superb, well done Treez   I think they're giving 20 sets away so there may be more BB winners (if they entered).
miranda

I have been receiving free books from  TES - Times Education Supplement - for free to review, but I haven't been listing them on here because they have mostly been non-fiction teacher-y books. Today though I received a lovely hardback book from them. It is called 'The Savage' and is by David Almond and illustrated by Dave McKean. It is apparently 'A graphic novel within a novel' and is aimed at children aged 7+. It is a lovely looking book, I will let you know what I think when I have read it.
Shazza

I've had an email to say I've won £50 of books from Browseforbooks.com.  Really pleased because it's rare I win anything.

And if I hadn't discovered this website through Readitswapit I wouldn't have entered in the first place, so thank you Babbling Books!

Well done Shazza and welcome to BB! What a lovely surprise, you must be chuffed!

Let us know what you buy.
lovely treez

Well done Shazza - do let us know what you buy!!

I received two unexpected parcels today.

One from Transworld Publishers - I won a limited edition proof copy of The Death Maze by Ariana Franklin.

Synopsis:  Since solving a particularly nasty case of child murder using her forensic skills, Adelia Aguiler is deemed too valuable to send back to the School of Medicine in Salerno.  Instead, King Henry II has decided to keep her in England.  This is bad news for Adelia - in 12th century England women doctors are regarded with great suspicion.  So,with her illegitimate child, Adelia is forced to live and practice in the secrecy of Cambridgeshire's fenland. But at Henry's court, terrible things are happening. Queen Eleanor is not only stirring up revolt against her husband, but rumour has it that she has also poisoned the King's favourite mistress, Rosamund Clifford.  If Henry believes the stories, England will be torn apart as King battles Queen.

Sounds really good - although very different from my usual reads.

I also received, direct from Tagman Press a proof copy of Spellbound by Margit Sandemo

Synopsis:  In the freezing Norwegian winter of 1581 the plague robs sixteen year old Silje Angrimsdotter of all her family.  Homeless, starving and sherpherding two newly orphaned infants, she heads in desparation for the warmth of the funeral pyres blazing beyond the city gates of corpse-littered Trondheim.  But in the shadowy forest one of the infamous Ice People, a strangly captivating 'wolf man' comes to her aid..

This one sounds interesting too.
Tigerlily

Well done Anne, what a lovely surprise! Both books sound really good...(adding to wish list now...)

E mail to tell me I've won a copy of The Carhullan Army waiting for me tonight.  A wishlist book, and I'm really delighted!
sirg1006

Well done Annie and Anne!

I won a £20 Amazon voucher today on Frugaller... very tempted to buy books but shall keep it for a bit me thinks!

D
annecater

Well done Annie - I loved the Carhullan Army - hope you do too.
Well done Debbie too.

I got a copy of Bright Shiny Morning by James Frey from Waterstones to review for their book club.
I also got a proof copy of The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry from the publishers.
annecater

I received another uncorrected proof copy from a publisher today, I have her first novel on TBR, so really should read that one first.
This one sounds interesting too:

t’s summer 1936, and the world is on the cusp of change, but there’s little sign of this in rural Sussex. So when local girl Kitty Allen answers an advert looking for ‘a good plain cook’, she has no idea what she’s in for. For starters, her employer is an American called Ellen Steinberg who believes in calling the staff by their first names and sunbathing in the nude. Then there’s Ellen’s eleven-year-old daughter, Geenie, a bright, unhappy little thing, and Mrs Steinberg’s gentleman friend, Mr Crane, who’s said to be a poet — even though he doesn’t have a beard and doesn’t seem to write much poetry either. Rich bohemians imagining themselves as communists, Steinberg and Crane see themselves as champions of ‘the people’ — not that they know the first thing about how the people actually live.

Kitty is in no place to criticise — after all she claimed to be a good plain cook, despite hardly knowing how to boil an egg. Utterly out of her depth, she is relieved to have the gardener, Arthur, to talk to. Otherwise she’d never last a summer in this madhouse. Ellen Steinberg wants life to run as smoothly as the love story she imagines her lover George Crane to be writing. But as Kitty arrives, the dream is on the edge of falling apart.
Tigerlily

I missed these last few wins. Congrats Annie and Debbie - great wins!

Anne, I noticed you're reading a book by James Frey. Let us know how you get on with it. Have you read his others - Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard?

Yes, I've got one too Glynis!  It's massive, there is no way I'll read it before the chat though as I have a few to read for other people.  I emailed him today to tell him that I'd got a copy and also that Candlemoth is book of the month.

I've had a few review copies this month that I forgot to mention on here:

Goodnight, Beautiful by Dorothy Koomson
Under a Blood Red Sky by Kate Furnivall
Guernica by Dave Boling
Under Control by Mark McNay

They just seem to keep popping through the letter box and most of the time I've no idea where they come from!

I got another book from Harper Collins today, Sword Song by Bernard Cornwell from the survey for The Lace Reader (proof copy) so I got 2 books out of that one in effect!

I've been doing rather well out of these recently, I think I've had 3 books from the last 4 surveys. And since you get to choose, you usually get something you want.
Tigerlily

wow well done! I'm yet to win a book from HC. Maybe they don't like my answers

I got a freebie to review from Bookrabbit today.

The Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie by Alan Bradley - due to be published in January 2009.

Synopsis
It is June 1950 and a sleepy English village is about to be awakened by the discovery of a dead body in Colonel de Luce's cucumber patch. The police are baffled, and when a dead snipe is deposited on the Colonel's doorstep with a rare stamp impaled on its beak, they are baffled even more. Only the Colonel's daughter, the precocious Flavia -when she's not plotting elaborate revenges against her nasty older sisters in her basement chemical laboratory, that is - has the ingenuity to follow the clues that reveal the victim's identity, and a conspiracy that reached back into the de Luce family's murky past. Flavia and her family are brilliant creations, a darkly playful and wonderfully atmospheric flavour to a plot of delightful ingenuity.

Thank you for telling me about that facebook group because I just won a book from them! The Last Concubine by Lesley Downer!

The postman today brought me a total surprise, a book won from Harper Collins surveys. It is Burning Bright by Tracey Chevalier and I do remember choosing it but it was ages ago, I would say at least 2 months if not more. So I'd assumed I'd not won!

Doesn't take much to cheer me up for the day! I think that's 4 I've had from them now.
