Surprising read - Heavy Weather by Bruce Sterling

I got Heavy Weather as a RISI book some weeks back. Never really expecting to read it.....I can't put the darn thing down!
It's really captured my imagination, I grabbed it the other night when I could feel a Hypo coming on (I'm on insulin).
I know this sounds odd - but I go downstairs, if I can get there, & have a cup of tea and some toast or something, an Ideal opportunity to read as I start to feel better.....and it saves me dozing off before my blood sugar is back up.
It's set in 2030 - the world is a grim place, AIDS, global warming, endemic drug adiction, robots & smart machines.....sounds awful....but it's the way it's written that makes it so captivating. Not my normal sort of read at all - I must learn to keep an open mind until I try things..lol

That sound's like something to try. My boys have always liked fantasy/futuristic as part of their reading diet and I have gradually moved up from the standard eight year old fare to the teenage stuff they read now. I have long been meaning to try something written for adults as the next stage and so I think I might look out for this.

Is it the one by Bruce Sterling?  I found two with this title but the other one was by Wodehouse.

Sounds intriguing, Zan.  I quite like books in this genre as long as the prose isn't too dense.

Hi Folks,
No it's not intense to read - some description but not like SK's 4 pages to describe a blade of grass!!
It is the one by Stearling - if you look on Amazon.com you can read an extrace - however it's just aftetr this extract it gets interesting....lol
So far in my readinf. the protagonist & his sister (who has just sprung him from a medical clinic in Mexico) have just arrived at a settlement in the desert - a bit like a cross bettween an eco-village & mad max......but not so mad if you get me!!
I'm happy to send it onto anyone when I've done with it.

It sounds great Zan.  A couple of years ago I wouldnt have touched anything like that, but having read a few in a similar style recently my appetite has been whetted.
