I've got a couple of books to read before I can start this but I'm really looking forward to it! _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I'm really looking forward to this one. It was Richard and Judy's winner this summer and I've not heard a bad thing about it yet. _________________ Currently reading: The Tent The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy and Granny The Pag by Nina Bawden

I'll be very surprised if this isn't universally enjoyed. It's just such a readable and easy book to get into, likeable characters, and excellent period detail. Will post thoughts on it later in the month-but you won't be surprised to know I've given it 5 stars!

I read this one a while back and quite enjoyed it. I gave it 3 stars because although I enjoyed it and it was a fairly good and easy read...that's all it was. It was quite an interesting story but I didn't love it. The characters were fairly rudimentary, the plot was pretty basic and it was easy going. It's likable but it didn't stick in my mind long after I'd read it.
I have this and I am umming and ahhing whether to start it on my way to France at the weekend... it's either this on Merde Happens which is kind of French related!
Will read it this month though seeing as though I nominated it!
I'm only about 100 pages in and I'm really enjoying it so far. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I managed to read all of Part 1 last night and kinda agreeing with Charlotte at the moment - is a nice story but nothing really grabbing me. It's weird reading it after 'Don't Tell Mummy' as the history of the main character is revealed in practically the same way.

A wonderful, engrossing, yet very easy read. Grace, the protagonist ,was an ambitious, articulate and clever woman, and her life and dreams lifted the novel from simply being a period/historical set piece.Grace was a wonderful creation, as interesting in old age as she was in her youth, and I was impressed with the author's depiction of her in old age, which was dignified, but with a touch of humour too.
The characters in Riverton were wonderful, and very well depicted. The plot, predictable, but no less engrossing for that (I did get the final twist wrong, in fairness!) There were many interesting twists to the plot-although Ursula's relationship to the family pushed belief to it's limits, and I felt it was an unnecessary embellishment. At the other end of the spectrum, the reintroduction of Alfred later in life was a master stroke, and very moving.
An incredible debut, and I'll certainly read any subsequent work from this author. _________________ Currently reading,

Oops! I finished this the other day and completely forgot to post my thoughts!
I pretty much agree with all you've said there Elaine...I too thought the story was predictable and had a different theory about the final twist in the story! I really enjoyed the book and could imagine it being a fab ITV Drama or movie.
I'm going to give it 4 stars because although I thought it was a really good book which was well written, I feel like there was something missing from it that I can't quite put my finger on at the moment! I may add more later! _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I absolutely loved this and gave it 5 stars. It's an easy to read page turner, Kate Morton writes so fluidly, I raced through the book. I agree some of the plot is predictable, but I believe it is deliberately so.
Spoiler:
I didn't guess the final twist and was on tenterhooks reading the final pages. I had no idea it ended that way, and Hannah's letter to Grace as the last page of the book was very well done.
I loved that Alfred tracked Grace down later in life There was also one sentence in the book that took my breath away - the way Morton describes Robbie moving a lock of hair from Hannah's face and saying, 'but however would I get to see you?'. So moving - I felt I was in Hannah's shoes and my heart was all a-flutter! Wonderful.
I loved how Hannah's telling Grace, 'you don't read shorthand' made sense to me at the end, and I understood Grace's refs to guilt.
I liked how Morton moved from one temporal setting to another in the book - think her writing crossed over from Grace's present to her Riverton past very well. I loved being transported back.
The opening line reminded me of du Maurier's Rebecca - last night I dreamt I was at Manderley again. And Grace reminiscing about her past reminded me a little of the lady in Fried Green Tomatoes at the Stop Cafe (that's the 2nd time something's reminded me of that book!).
The story didn't make me cry, but I was immensely moved. I'm impressed by the structure of the book - think it's structured brilliantly.
I wanted a book I couldn't put down, one that was easy to read and The House at Riverton didn't disappoint. I love stately homes so enjoyed the setting. I gave it 5 stars because it gave me exactly what I was looking for from a book, if that makes sense.
(Goes to show no matter what class of women were in that time period, no matter how wealthy, they were repressed, restricted. I imagine many upper class women accepted this, but for someone like Hannah, it must have been frustrating).

Did you nominate it Mel?
No but I'd wanted to read it for a while and had just got it in a swap when the polls went up.
Like I said before though, I did really enjoy the book but I feel that it was lacking something but I still can't think what. I'd definately look out for more by this author. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

Finished it recently & really enjoyed it. Gave it 4 stars as thought it was very good but not outstanding.
Spoiler:
Guessed early on that Grace was Fredericks daughter & would have liked to have read a bit more about the affair between him & her mother. I enjoyed how it was written- as the old Grace telling her story. I didn't guess the twist at the end but thought it was brilliant. The best bit of the book. I agree the Ursula character wasn't really neccessary. I found it a bit slow in the middle part of the book. I was so annoyed with Grace for not leaving Hannah & going to Ipswich to marry Alfred. I felt Hannah didn't deserve her & that Grace was too devoted & loyal to her, which really frustrated me. Although glad she met Alfred again a nice touch by the author I thought. All in all a very good & enjoyable book & would read more by this author again.

Spoiler:
I agree with you, I wanted Grace to go to Ipswich with Alfred too. I gathered Grace was Frederick's daughter on page 63, the way he looked at her as though he saw a ghost. It was very obvious, but the twist at the end wasn't. I too, would've liked to know more about Frederick's affair with Grace's mother. Would be really interesting. I couldn't stand Emmeline. Didn't Hannah say Robbie wasn't enough for her? I think she saw him as a ticket to freedom, but didn't want to part from her luxurious lifestyle. I didn't really feel sorry for her. I really enjoyed the book. Elements of it are similar to Atonement - I wonder if she took inspiration from it. I think it's a fun book, but as you say Amarie, not outstanding. It lacks finer detail I think, but is still a good read
