Well, an ok book for me but not one I'd rave about. I found parts of the storyline a bit "conncocted"
Spoiler:
For example, the bit about Hannah thinking Grace had learnt shorthand and that misunderstanding never being cleared up and being pivotal to the end. Everything seemed a bit too convenient, like a thriller where it is obvious what meaning everything in the plot is going to have. I guessed fairly early on about Frederick being Graces mother and alos that there must have been some big cover up by Hannah and Emmeline, though not the details.
In fact, the more I think about the details of this one the more it falls apart for me, sorry all!
I'm a bit behind everyone else reading this one, but must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Barbara Taylor Bradford reflections, Upstairs Downstairs, Atonement, The Observations - it was all there and in a rattling good read. I must admit that until I read this thread I hadn't even noticed the discrepancies and contrivances in the story - I just suspended disbelief, rolled with it + really loved the experience!
