I didn't know William Brodrick had another out, I'll keep an eye out for it, thanks.

Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte  8/10 . 1001 book and BB Jan read. New Year Resolution to read one of each intact –so far.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles  Thomas Hardy – audio book – Thought this was going to be a usual tale of country life – poor girl meets rich man who has his wicked way etc, but this had an unexpected ending.  8 /10

Started War and Peace again, this time on audio.

Well my list is rubbish compared to all of yours! I haven't read all that much ~ will try and do better this month!

Vanish by Tess Gerritsen (a good thrilling read but a bit gory when a 'corpse' comes back to life in the morgue!)
The Teracotta Dog by Andrea Camilleri (I love everything by this author his humour and exploration of Sicily makes me chuckle!)
Thinking of You by Jill MAnsell (A nice Chick Lit read read it in one evening)
Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (couldn't finish this one as I've seen the show and the movie and can't get my head around the differences in character)[/b]

Sula by Toni Morrison - loved this very short novel - I'm not surprised she was awarded the Nobel Prize. I loved this one too! Have you read any others by her? 'Beloved' is one of my all time favs and I liked 'The Bluest Eye' too, but wasn't keen on 'Paradise' My first read of hers Miranda - I have both Beloved and Paradise on TBR though.

The Outsiders by S E Hinton - a classic story of teenage gangs written for young adults.  Enjoyed this very much and cant believe I hadnt read it before.  It's hard to believe that Hinton was only 16 when she wrote this.  I'd like to see the film now. Another of my favs, I teach it every year and I am still not bored with it - kids love it! I can understand why kids love it, I wish we had studied books like that when I was at school!

.

Trespass by Valerie Martin - really enjoyed this, quite dark and unlikeable characters but a great read. I have 'Property' on my tbr Property is a great read too, I would recommend it

Mr Pip by Lloyd Jones - I was a little let down by this one really.  The concept of the story and the morals behind it are excellent but I wasnt too keen on the writing style and by the end chapters was a bit fed up with the main character. I agree - liked it, but didn't think it was WOW! So glad to find another with a similar opinion at last!

I See You by Gregg Hurwitz 7/10 - good read, a bit different from usual crime/thrillers.

Getting Rid of Matthew by Jane Fallon 7/10- poorly written but the story carried me along.

Sleepy Head by Mark Billingham 7/10
- good read, aiming to read series by Easter, my new mission...lol. But did guess killer.

On Chesil beach by Ian McEwan 8/10 - my 2nd favourite by him after Atonement. Gentle read of sexually repressed couple on their wedding night in 1960's.
But oddly written, as he keeps mentioning the time they live in etc.

Gravity by Tess Gerritsen 7/10 - good read set in space, but prefer her Rizzoli books.

Double Cross by James Patterson 7/10- not great but better than Cross.

Making History by Stephen Fry 6/10 - time travel plot to prevent Holocaust, started well but then dragged.

Scaredy Cat by Mark Billingham 7/10 - 2nd in series, enjoyed it. Guessed killer again, am i getting cleverer??

Tamburlaine Must Die by Louise Welsh 10/10- loved this, well written take on events that may have led to murder of Christopher Marlowe.

Death Message by Mark Billingham 7/10 - enjoying the series, although i jumped to the end here as i bumped into a copy.

Only Strange People Go To Church by Laura Marney 6/10 - ok read, but didn't like the ending, the heroine was a bit daft and the romance not believable in my opinion.

The Woods by Harlen Coben 10/10 - loved it, Coben is the best!

The Water Clock by Jim Kelly 3/10 - didnt finish as it was going nowhere fast.

Trespass by Valerie Martin 8/10 - really enjoyed this but didn't like anyone and the ending was odd.

The Point of Rescue by Sophie Hannah 8/10 - enjoyed this right up to the VERY far-fetched ending.

Lazybones by Mark Billingham 7/10 - serial vigilante killer targets convicted rapists.

Dead Simple by Peter James 9/10- groom is buried alive in stag night prank, excellent twists and turns.

I haven't read any of these but I do have Only Strange People Go to Church and you have reminded me I have Tamburlaine Must Die by Louise Welsh.  I must dig it out now you have given it such a good score.

You did better than me.  Why did you give up on the Tenderness of Wolves?  I was looking forward to reading it.  See you gave A Gathering Light a good score, I must get back to it.

I'm not sure why I couldn't get into Tenderness of Wolves as normally it's book I'm sure I'd enjoy. It wasn't that I hated it, it seemed like a good read. I think the trouble was that what I was reading was just not staying in my head! I'd put the book down to go do something and come back to it and then have to re read what I'd just read because I'd forgotten what had happened! Maybe I should take it off my swaps and try again with this one?

My Lover’s Lover – Maggie O’Farrell - ok but not as good as Esme Lennox 7/10

White Teeth – Zadie Smith - enjoyed this one, part of 1001 list 8/10

Beautiful Child – Torey Hayden - loved this, as all of hers, 9/10

Tenth Circle – Jodi Picoult - really liked this one, only the second of hers I have read (read MSK) but think I enjoyed it as much if not more 8/10

Five people you meet in heaven – Mitch Albom - a very easy read, but a bit insubstantial IMO. I haven't ready any others of his but would probably give them a try 6/10

Now halfway through The Queen's Fool - Philippa Gregory, but will leave that until next month!

Better late than never!

The Mermaid Chair - Sue Monk Kidd 9/10 - I enjoyed it even more than The Secret life of Bees (Thanks for the extended loan, Linda)

Notes from An Exhibition - Patrick Gale 8.5/10 (ML)  I really liked this study of a family whose mother is a "mad" artist.  She doesn't live in the attic but she does her best paintings there!

Random Acts of Heroic Love - Danny Scheinmann 9/10 Great debut novel - dual narrative and time frames, the contemporary narrative based on the author's own experiences and the historical one based on his grandfather/great-grandfather's (can't remember..) war time experiences as a POW in Siberia.

A Quiet Belief in Angels - R J Ellory 8.5/10 Slow moving thriller which I really enjoyed, beautifully written with a very poignant storyline.  I don't know if diehard thriller fans would find it gripping enough but I loved the setting and the slowish pace which reflected the remoteness of Augusta Falls.

Before I Die - Jenny Downham 9/10 A YA/Teen novel but I recommend it to all ages - Tessa wants to live life to the full before she dies - lots of humour amidst the more poignant scenes and what a beautifully written ending. Yes, you will shed some tears but it's ultimately so life affirming.

Are you reading all the Richard and Judy books Treez?  I intend to - except 'Then we Came to the End' which I am not sure I like the sound of.

I don't think I have all of them.  I have already read Mr Pip and A Thousand Splendid Suns and have tried to swap for Blood River but without much success.  I have The Visible World and Then We Came To the End tbr so, yes, now that I've thought about it, I will be reading, have read all of them.  I've seen indifferent reviews of TWCTTE but thought I'd give it a go.  I'll let you know what I think of it and if you're interested I could send it on to you.

Finished To Cut A Long Story Short by Tony Hadley which I loved even though I'm not a massive fan of Hadley. Now about to start "Time In A Bottle" by Denise Deegan

Just realised I read another book in Jan

The Russian Concubine by Kate Furnival - 8/10

Essentially, this book is a love story between a Russian girl and a young Chinese communist but it is not a soppy story although it has its romantic moments though despite what the title implies it hasn’t a great deal of sex.   It is the story of the clash of two cultures, of brutally and dreadful poverty and a story that will appeal to both men and women as it has everything, adventure, blackmail, Triad brutality and history.  The descriptions of the old city draw you in, the characters are ‘real’ and the story has some surprises. I can’t really say much about the story with out giving too much away but it is an excellent first novel.

This one sounds really good, I think I'll add it to my wish list!
