Hi Booki, welcome to BB
I read The Lovely Bones ages ago and didn't much care for it to be honest. Didn't like the ending scenario - wasn't done convincingly enough for me - and felt the characters were a bit cardboardy/dull. I loved the opening line and hoped for a much more intriguing read. I gave it 3 stars.
I read this a few years ago, and thought it was okay, nothing special. Over-rated, but not bad. However, I really thought Lucky, by the same author was a good book, although it was uncomfortable reading at times. _________________ My Blog

I've also read her latest The Almost Moon - which again is quite dark and disturbing, but a better read than The Lovely Bones - although the main character is hateful.
I'm just reading this at the moment and am finding it quite hard going, I must admit. I hope I get on better with The Lovely Bones!
I am listening to The Almost Moon on audio at the moment. So far, so-so. I think Alice Sebold would be better sticking to non-fiction! _________________ My Blog

I never read the book but it was a good Audiobook to send me to sleep I thought it started of really well and then by the middle was drifting into the unbelievable and by the end was just like eh?
Agree though that Lucky is much better but as it's true it doesn't go into a completely unbelievable world.
If I can get hold of The Lovely Bones again though I probably will take the time to read it.

Do you want my copy of The Lovely Bones Debbie? It's on my swaps list on RISI, or I can just send it to you, I won't read it again anyway. _________________ Currently Reading:

I seem to be in the minority here - I thought this book was very good. The concept of writing from beyond the grave was an unusual one, although the story was very distressing at times, I liked the way the author explored the differing emotions that the various characters experienced - and I really enjoyed the ending!

I read this a couple of years ago, and whilst I don't remember it too well, I do remember I wasnt much impressed. An ok read but not one I'd read again.

I sort of second that
While I didn't thought the book was very good, I agree with everything else mags said. Bar the ending part which I don't really remember as I read this book years ago (did everyone moved on including the murdered girl? I seem to remember that's how it ended but I am not very sure)
The scene I didn't care too much about was the one where:
Spoiler:
our girl (I'm very sorry but I don't remember any names) took over the body of her friend and made love to the guy she used to like. That is really strange especially if we think about his point of view - were his feelings for her that strong in the first place, to still care for her after all these years? Not to mention his recognizing her in the first place was a bit unlikely
Four stars from me, because I enjoyed this rather unusual "concept of writing" as mags puts it

Kay - I hope you don't mind but I spoilered your post just in case anyone reads about the scene you mentioned before they read the book.
I agree with what you said about that scene though - it didn't work for me either. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I definitely agree with Kay about the scene you mentioned in the spoiler section of your post. An absolute no no as far as I was concerned! _________________ Currently Reading:
I can't remember that scene as it's been a while since I read it...maybe I'll revisit it as I'm intrigued! _________________ Reading: The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho

I read Lovely Bones a year or more ago so the details are a bit hazy but I do remember enjoying it & gave it 4 stars. It started off really well & ended well I think! but what spoiled it for me too was
Spoiler:
that scene where she comes back & has sex with the boy, I thought it was a bit ridiculous
I read this book when it was first released, and, although the details are a bit hazy now, I remember enjoying it a lot. I thought it was an interesting idea, and liked the characters. I found it a bit sad at times too. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the movie.

I read this ages ago as well. I did skim read it again after I recently read Lucky (which I found harrowing). I remember liking the Lovely Bones. I found the subject matter disturbing but I felt she dealt with it fairly effectively. There were parts of it which didn't quite fit but I think so it didn't make 5 stars but I did give it 4 stars. I found it any easy book to read but I certainly didn't think it was light! It's not a light subject matter in my opinion.
Overall I really like the book despite the disturbing subject matter. I'll give it 4 stars I think.
Spoiler:
I do agree that the scene where Susie went into Ruth's body was a bit far fetched and we could've done without it. But I did like the whole Heaven thing, I think it's nice to think there might be people up there watching whats going on with their friends and family after they've died.
I also didn't like the way Mr. Harvey ended, thought it was too quick and would've really liked for him to be officially found out to be honest. But then again, I suppose that's life!
