1. Moby Dick by Herman Melville - not read
2. 19 Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol - not read
3: Bleak House by Charles Dickens - not read, might want to though
4: Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe - not read
5: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - have read and liked it alot!
6: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte - nope - not read ( starting to see an alarming pattern emerge here)
7: Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray - not read
8: Middlemarch by George Eliot - not read
9: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy - not read
10: Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert - not read
11: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky - nope
12: Daniel Deronda by George Eliot - not read, and never heard of?
13: Scarlet and Black by Stendhal - same as above
14: Persuasion by Jane Austen - read this one - my favourite Austen - I love Captain Wentworth!
15: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad - nope
16: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain - read a little bit of this but got bored and never finished
17: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - read a long time ago, will have to read it again
18: Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne - never heard of
19: Dracula by Bram - started it but never finished - a thing called university and new boyfriend cut the reading short unfortunately - will have to re-read
20: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - tried reading this years ago and got bored. Couldnt get in to it. Probably cause I read the Swedish translation with lots of fancy words, so maybe have to try the original version?
ooh, dear - not many that I've read there..

I will have to have a Bronte reading session before Howarth. |
Definitely. Well if we go in the summer, you should have plenty of time to read it. Wonder what you'll think of Heathcliff. If you weren't enamoured by Mr Rochester then I doubt you will be by Heathcliff _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I finished PS I Love You today and now I am going to start on my first Classic read of the year! I'm going to start with Madame Bovary (are you with me Glynis? ) , which will kill two birds with one stone as it's on the 1001 list too! _________________ Reading: The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho

I finished Madame Bovary today and I'm not sure what to think of it really. I thought it was quite slow and I wasn't that bothered about what happened to the characters. I did think it was well written and atmospheric but I'm always disappointed if I don't care about the characters.
At least that's the first book off my Classic reading list and my first one off the 1001 list this year! What to read next?! _________________ Reading: The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho

Here's the ones I've read.....
1: Moby Dick by Herman Melville - I can't believe this even makes it into a Top 20 list let alone number one it's so awful. I read this for university.
4: Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe - Love this novel!
5: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - Love this too!
6: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte - Love this as well! lol
7: Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray - and this!
8: Middlemarch by George Eliot - and this!
10: Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert - don't love this but did enjoy it.
14: Persuasion by Jane Austen - Love this
16: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain -Favourite Mark Twain novel. Prefer it to Tom Sawyer.
20: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - Love this. I had to read it twice to understand it!
Problem I have with these lists is that they're very subjective (plus they make everyone feel guilty for not having read them all). There's tons of classics I could have added and which I think should be on there which aren't like...why no Anthony Trollope? and what about The Scarlet Letter and Jane Eyre? or well I suppose everyone has their own lists!

You could try The Doctor's Wife by Mary Elizabeth Braddon...it's a take on Madame Bovary in a more 'English' style I suppose. You might prefer it to MB. Mind you, you have lots more classics from the list to read I suppose without me adding to it! |

Thanks Charlie! Glad you liked so many of them it encourages me to carry on after being a bit disappointed by MB! Thanks for the Braddon recommendation though I'll definitely put it on the list _________________ Reading: The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho

It was very well written but you know when a book fails to 'grab' you? I didn't really care for the characters and for me that's a big part of the reading experience, as I'm sure it is with most people. My lack of enjoyment may also have been marred by impatience though as I was eager to get on with loads of other books at the same time.
I am now making a conscious effort to take my time with these classics and enjoy them. Mind you I don't think I'll be reading War and Peace in a couple of days so will definitely be taking my time there
