I know it's probably more important to teach this aspect of WW2 in French schools, but it's not taught here either. I certainly knew nothing of the Vel d'Hiv roundup, I'd never heard of it. It makes me wonder who decides what is and isn't on the curriculum regarding WW2... |
SK has been published now in 10 countries (10 more on the way) and believe me , most of my Italian, spanish, dutch, german, swedish, portugese, russian, polish and greek readers, not to mention my US ones, had never heard of the Vel d'Hiv... |
This is just incrediable. I know teachers and students are pressed for time in the classroom (well they are here anyway), but the fact that this cover up / lack of of knowledge of an horrific atrocity is Europe wide..... it begs belief.
Is SK going to be published outside of Europe and the US too?

I really think that if books like Sarah's Key were part of the UK curriculum then it would do wonders for our poor reading stats here. Whilst I am pleased that JK Rowling has encouraged reading in young people, books that are more realistic would benefit them far far more.

I did very little history at school, I opted for geography but I've also never heard of the round up. I think because of Anne Frank's diary we all know about round ups in Holland but I'd never really thought about France, partly I guess because of efforts to conceal it.
Fiction that is close to real life and tells us what it might have been like is one of my favourites and I agree this should be on school reading lists.
Thanks again,
Sarah (yes, a common name!)
(And I too will be eagerly awaiting your next novel in english, think my A level French is far too rusty to attempt the others.) |
Thank you Sarah ! _________________ http://figtreefranglais.blogspot.com/ |

I'm off now to put another child to bed and listen to his homework, recounting his favourite book!! I hope I can persuade him and his sister to read my copy of Sarah's Key which is a most definite keeper. You deserve so much success with this book and I am anxiously awaiting the publication of the next one. Au revoir!! You have to come on a book signing tour, by the time we've told everyone about Sarah's Key you will be hounded!! _________________ Currently reading - The Italian Boy - Murder and Grave Robbery in 1830s London - Sarah Wise |

We had 22 college students in the Holocaust class (at a very small rural college). Four of us were nontraditional students. It was amazing to me that the trad students were SO involved and interested in the topic, particularly after we took a field trip by tour bus to the Holocaust Museum in DC.
Seeing piles of the actual shoes of the victims, as well as their suitcases (since they believed they were simply being relocated) and then walking through one of the railcars and into a room of those "bunkbeds"...seeing the tower of pictures reaching up three stories of the people who died from one town...
If you live near a Holocaust museum, do take a trip there. We must never forget... |

Thanks, Tatiana. I didn't expect to participate so much. Thought I'd just read the postings. When I see Dr. Horn tomorrow at class, I'll encourage her to drop in and read what was posted.

Thank you for sharing this with us. The Shoah Memorial here in Paris that I mention in SK is a sobering, powerful place to go to as well.

No, my Nicolas is a wonderful, loving man and he puts up with me, which is most remarkable.
He was the first person to read SK

You are right Marion, we should never forget. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
I visited Auschwitz with my family when I was just 11 years old and the impact has always stayed with me. There are some horrific pictures on the walls, showing the squalor the Jews were forced to live in, and how thin they were... Also another memory for me is the artifacts they'd recovered and are now on display. Huge cases with things like - hair that'd been shaved off, glasses, false limbs etc inside them. I can still seem them in my mind now.
With that thought in mind, I also have to sign off now. Thank you so much to you Tatiana for chatting to us this evening, and to you Marion for joining us!
I'm sure I'll "see" you on Facebook!
