I have just managed to read 11 and 12 over the last two nights.  Sometimes I can't believe what I am reading.  It still baffles me how one man can wield so much power and have such stupid ideas.  The iron melting episode was unbelievable.

Not sure which chapter I should be one but I am only reading Wild Swans for a while until I get caught up!

one thing's struck me over the last few chapters

Spoiler:

and that's how young the people getting heavily involved are.  I'd heard of the red guards, but I'd always thought of them as adult army people, not children.  The thought of children being encouraged to attack adults turns my stomach somewhat.  It's like anti social behaviour, but it's fully sanctioned.  It'll be interesting to see what it's like in a few years (in the book I mean) when these children are adults.

I agree with both of the last two comments. I've heard of rioting students, rallies, the Red Guards etc., but I had no idea that these were school children that were so actively involved.

Spoiler:

It makes sense that the kids stayed at school, so they were only inflenced by their peers and not their parents. Making them into agressive, brutal young things. I agree... how did these youngsters turn out? I'm sure others must have felt the same as Chang and were reluctant to get involved.
