I have finally finished Wild Swans.  The good thing about this type of book is that it is powerful enough to stay with you even if you put it down for a few weeks.  When I had a break from it, I never had any trouble picking the story up again.

This book has been a real eye opener for me.  I think one thing that keep getting to me is that most of the lat chapters took place in my life time.  I know quite a bit about the Russian revolution but realise now I didn't know a thing about what was happening in China.  I really struggle trying to understand why this one man could gain the power the total control millions of people who were prepared to do his bidding.

Following Sparky's lead I have started Mao, at 2am one morning when I couldn't sleep.  I haven't read  much yet but this extremely powerful man started life in such an isolated valley it took 2 years for the news of the Emperors death to reach his family.

I am glad that I finally read Wild Swans, it has been a real education.
