I did like it, but it wasn't one of my favourite reads...I was put of it to start with as it was hard back and very heavy to hold, so I didn't get a read it in a short burst which is how I tend to get the most out of books.  I would prob give it 6/10.  How are you getting on with the Woman in White?  That ought to be my next 1001 read-I borrowed it off a friend a while ago.

The reason I read The Woman in White is because it was a Christmas present off a friend so I thought I'd best get it read rather than it sitting on the shelf for ages
Although it is said to be one of the first Mystery novels, I guess it's pretty tame,  to me it felt more like a Romance ...

Ooh, didn't realise The Reader was a 1001 book. Shame I gave one I got as part of a set away! Must "re-obtain" a copy!

8.  A Clockwork Orange

I am not finished this yet, but prob will do tomorrow. I can't sleep!  It is horrible, and also so difficult to read with the introduction of the new slang.  Glad I have given it a go, but didn't thinkn it would be quite so harrowing and affect me as much.

I thought this is what you're reading judging by your status bar!   You're right it is harrowing.

I didn't realise that this was a 1001 book either - and I read it in January.  Intresting book that gives you lots to think about.

I'm often surprised by finding things on the list I didn't know about too Gwen. Classics are always worth a check as they are often there but the more modern ones are harder to predict!

I'm two thirds of the way through number 3 for me - A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess. I agree with Katey and Glynis. It is really harrowing, especially the 1st part. The social commentary is very interesting though. I'm keen to see how it ends. The use of gang slang is hard to get your head around.

I've finished A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess, my 3rd for the year so far. Overall I think it's one of those books that you have to read. The first part is very harrowing and violent but parts two and three are more about the social commentary of how to fix the problem of youth violence. The language took me a while to get my head around, but I think it made the violent parts more bearable as he wasn't using graphic language that's instantly recognisable.

I've just discovered that Brideshead Revisited is on the 1001 challenge book list, and as that's my next book it's straight on to number 4 for me.

I've given up on On the Road before too, not sure if it is still on the bookshelf waiting for me to get around to give it another go...
